The Best Beaches on Hvar Island, Croatia
The most stunning beaches on Hvar—revealed.
With a reputation that straddles both glitz and off-grid allure, Hvar Island isn’t exactly a secret—but its beaches still hold plenty of them. Imagine secluded coves where the water is so clear it disappears under your toes, pine-fringed bays that smell like summer itself, and sun-bleached rocks perfect for stretching out with a book and a bottle of local rosé.
No matter if you’re after a more lively beach club scene or the kind of pebble cove you can have entirely to yourself, Hvar delivers —quietly and spectacularly.
I spent a full week slow-traveling across the island, hopping between villages, hiking down to hard-to-reach shores, and letting curiosity guide me down unmarked trails—all in the name of finding Hvar’s best beaches.
From well-known spots just steps from Hvar Town to secret, almost-mythical coves at the far reaches of the island, I’ve dipped my toes into all of them (and in some cases, swam the extra mile).
This guide is ordered roughly by proximity to Hvar Town, starting with the most accessible beaches and gradually drifting farther afield. So whether you’re staying put in town or renting a scooter for a full-on coastal adventure, there’s something here for every kind of sun-chaser.
These are the best beaches on Hvar, my personal favorites to lay down a towel and soak up Hvar’s pristine shores.
Side Note: Don’t expect powdery white sands here—Hvar’s beaches are mostly pebble or smooth rock, with only a rare handful of sandy shores. But this is exactly what makes the Adriatic so dazzlingly clear. The absence of sediment means the water stays that iconic, almost unbelievable shade of turquoise. For this reason, I recommend bringing a pair of water shoes if you’re feet are sensitive to the stone.
15 Best Beaches on Hvar, Croatia
1. Bonj Beach (Hvar Town)
If you’re short on time or simply prefer your beach day with a side of convenience, Bonj Beach is your spot. Just a short stroll from Hvar Town, this lively, well-appointed beach is ideal for those who want to dive straight into the Adriatic without venturing too far.
With its sleek loungers, cocktail service, and iconic white stone cabanas, it’s a polished, practical choice that still delivers on beauty. That said, it’s no secret—Bonj is one of Hvar’s most popular beaches, so if you’re craving solitude or a hidden cove moment, you’ll want to keep moving.
It wasn’t my favorite beach on Hvar, but for a glam, hassle-free dip and a drink in hand before sunset? Bonj ticks all the boxes.
2. Pokonji Dol Beach (Hvar Town)
Just a 20-minute walk from Hvar Town, Pokonji Dol is where the town starts to fade and nature begins to take over. As you round the bend and the scent of pine trees greets you, this wide, pebbled beach feels more remote than it really is.
The water here is impossibly clear, framed by a charming lighthouse-topped islet just offshore, and the backdrop of pine forest adds that extra splash of Adriatic drama. It’s a popular spot, so if you’re coming in high season, aim for early—by midday, it tends to get lively.
But here’s a tip: if you’re craving something quieter, just keep following the coastal path beyond Pokonji Dol and you’ll stumble upon smaller, more secluded coves that feel worlds away…
3. Mekićevica Beach (Hvar Town)
Tucked away just a 15-minute walk past Pokonji Dol, Mekićevica Beach is the kind of place that feels like a secret, even though the locals have known about it forever. You’ll follow a rocky coastal path through pine forest and past a few hidden coves before arriving at this stunning double bay of smooth white pebbles and shockingly clear water.
There are no bars, no loungers, no soundtracks—just the rhythmic lapping of the sea and the occasional splash from a fellow swimmer. It’s raw, wild, and effortlessly beautiful—everything you want from a secluded Adriatic escape.
Bring water and snacks, something to lie on, and stay a while. Of all the beaches on Hvar I visited, this one stayed with me the most, and still, it might be one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve visited in Europe.
4. Robinson’s Beach (Hvar Town)
Keep following the coastal path beyond Mekićevica, and you’ll be rewarded with Robinson’s Beach—a quiet, pebbled cove that feels like it’s hiding in plain sight. Named after the laid-back beach restaurant perched just above the shore, this spot has a rustic, end-of-the-road charm that makes you want to linger.
The beach itself is small but serene, with crystalline water and fewer crowds than anything closer to town. After your swim, settle in at the Robinson restaurant for a long, leisurely lunch—think grilled Adriatic fish, simple salads, and local wine served with a sea breeze. Time here stretches, and second glasses are encouraged.
Not bad for a beach you can still reach on foot from Hvar Town.
5. Mala Milna Beach (Milna)
Further along Hvar’s southern coast and just before the village of Milna, you’ll find the tranquil hideaway that is Mala Milna Beach.
This lesser-known spot is a dream for those looking to escape the buzz and bask in serenity. Surrounded by rugged rocks and thick greenery, Mala Milna feels like a little oasis—far enough from town to be quiet, but not so remote that it’s a mission to reach (you can drive, scoot, or hike in from Milna).
The water here is glassy and calm, ideal for swimming or floating the day away, and the pebbled shore is usually blissfully uncrowded. Bring snacks, shade, and good company—there are no beach clubs here, just the gentle laps of the Adriatic.
6. Paščuka Beach (Zaraće)
Paščuka is one of those wild, cinematic beaches that looks like it comes straight out of a movie. Located beneath the tiny hamlet of Zaraće, this dramatic bay is hugged by craggy cliffs that plunge into translucent water so still it feels like glass.
Getting here involves a short downhill hike (or a brave scooter ride on winding roads), but the payoff is worth every step. There’s a rugged, untouched beauty to Paščuka—no fancy beach bars, no loungers—just jagged rocks, sun-bleached pebbles, and water so clear you can count the sea urchins. Make sure to pack everything in and out.
7. Malo Zaraće Beach (Zaraće)
Located just around the bend from its more popular sibling, Velo Zaraće, Malo Zaraće is one of my absolute favorite coves on Hvar—and one of the island’s best-kept semi-secrets. This hidden gem sits beneath the old stone village of Zaraće, down a narrow path that most day-trippers miss entirely.
What you’ll find at the end of the trail is a raw, intimate bay framed by towering cliffs and a ribbon of white pebbles lapped by that signature Hvar turquoise.
It’s part of a duo with nearby Velo Zaraće Beach, but Malo Zaraće is the quieter, wilder sibling—and if you like your beach days with a side of drama and zero crowd noise, this one’s for you. There are no facilities, no signs, and likely no one else around.
Just you, the sea, and the occasional curious fish. Bring a picnic, leave your expectations behind, and stay until the sun turns the rocks golden.
8. Velo Zaraće Beach (Zaraće)
If you’re after a beach with just the right balance of rustic charm and low-key amenities, Velo Zaraće Beach might be your sweet spot. This pebbled bay is the more accessible and slightly more social counterpart to neighboring Malo Zaraće.
The beach is framed by impressive rock formations that look like nature’s own amphitheater, and the water is, unsurprisingly, crystal clear—ideal for snorkeling or floating in that blissed-out Hvar haze.
Velo Zaraće is home to a couple of small, family-run restaurants where you can tuck into grilled squid or a plate of spaghetti pomodoro with your feet practically in the sea.
It’s not crowded by Hvar standards, but don’t expect total solitude—especially in summer. Still, with its postcard-perfect setting and relaxed vibe, it’s an easy place to spend an entire afternoon without even trying.
Top Tip: Thanks to the way the sun moves across the cliffs, Velo Zaraće is bathed in morning light—perfect for an early swim or sun-soaked breakfast by the sea. By afternoon, the sun shifts its favor to Malo Zaraće, just around the corner. For a full day of sunshine and that golden Adriatic glow, beach-hop between the two and follow the light.
9. Dubovica Beach
About 10 kilometers east of Hvar Town, this wide, pebbled bay is flanked by rugged cliffs and topped with a sprinkling of old stone houses, giving it that perfect blend of dramatic nature and lived-in charm.
The water is a shimmering, Adriatic palette of turquoise and cobalt so clear you can see straight to the bottom. You’ll need to hike down a short but steep trail from the road above, but trust me—it’s more than worth the effort.
At the heart of the beach sits Duba Beach Bar, a rustic little gem that perfectly fits the setting. Think driftwood stools, cold local beers, fruity cocktails, and the kind of soundtrack that instantly puts you in holiday mode.
Grab a drink, claim a shady spot under the pine trees, and settle into the rhythm of the bay—slow, sun-soaked, and gloriously unhurried.
And if you fall for Dubovica’s spell (you will), you can also stay the night. Villa Benedeta, located right on the beach, is available to book for those who want to trade the day-tripping crowds for a night or two of complete coastal solitude.
It’s the ultimate slow stay on one of Hvar’s most beautiful beaches—and it doesn’t get more idyllic than that.
10. Pišćena Beach
Pišćena Beach is a secluded gem, a little further down the coast from Dubovica, that rewards the adventurous with its pristine beauty. Located within a dense pine forest, this pebble beach features crystal-clear waters and an idyllic setting for swimming and snorkeling.
The beach’s remote location ensures a tranquil atmosphere, far removed from the bustling tourist spots. While there are no facilities directly on the beach, its untouched charm is part of the appeal, but make sure to bring your own refreshments and essentials to fully enjoy the serene environment.
Access to Pišćena Beach is possible by boat from Hvar’s harbor or a 20 walk down from the small access road, making it a perfect stop during a coastal exploration. The journey by boat, in particular, offers scenic views and the opportunity to discover nearby natural wonders, such as the Crvene Stijene (Red Rocks), a fascinating geological formation nearby.
11. Žukova Beach
Žukova is one of those places that makes you wonder why it’s not on every list—and quietly grateful that it isn’t. Located near the village of Stari Grad on Hvar’s north shore, this stretch of coastline is a mosaic of smooth flat rocks, crystalline pools, and hidden swimming spots etched into the rugged shoreline.
There’s no single beach here in the traditional sense—just a series of natural terraces that tumble into the sea, offering plenty of space to spread out and claim your own private perch.
Unlike the flashier southern beaches, Žukova has a raw, elemental vibe. No beach bars, no sunbeds, no curated “experience.” Just the sun, the stone, and the deep blue Adriatic. It’s the kind of place you bring a cooler, a towel, and a good book—and then lose track of time completely. The snorkeling here is also surprisingly good, with rocky ledges and little underwater nooks teeming with life.
If you’re after that off-the-radar, bring-your-own-everything kind of beach day, Žukova delivers in spades. Quiet, unspoiled, and effortlessly cool without even trying.
12. Mina Beach ( Jelsa)
Just a leisurely 500-meter stroll from the heart of Jelsa, Mina Beach is a local favorite that combines accessibility with natural charm. Unlike many of Hvar’s pebbled shores, Mina offers a rare sandy seabed, making it especially appealing for families with young children. The gentle slope into the clear, shallow waters provides a safe and inviting environment for swimmers of all ages.
The beach is well-equipped with amenities to enhance your day by the sea. Facilities include showers, changing cabins, and the option to rent sun loungers and umbrellas.
For refreshments, the nearby Mina Beach Restaurant & Lounge Bar serves a variety of beverages and dishes, allowing you to enjoy a beachside meal or drink without straying far from your sunbathing spot.
Mina Beach’s proximity to Jelsa means that you can easily combine a day at the beach with exploring the town’s charming streets, local shops, and cafes.
13. Grebišće Beach (Jelsa)
Another fantastic sandy spot close to Jelsa is Grebišće Beach—a family favorite and one of the rare places on Hvar where your feet will sink into soft sand rather than pebbles. Just a 15-minute walk or a quick bike ride from the town center, this shallow bay is tucked into a curve of pine forest and framed by low, golden cliffs that catch the light beautifully in the late afternoon.
The water here is warm, shallow, and incredibly clear, making it ideal for kids, casual swimmers, or anyone who prefers a gentle wade to a dramatic plunge. The beach is backed by a small campsite and a few casual spots where you can grab a cold drink or a bite. Despite its popularity, Grebišće still retains a laid-back, local vibe, especially in the early mornings or late afternoons.
If you’re based in Jelsa and looking for an easy beach day with soft sand, natural shade, and a splash of local life, Grebišće is your go-to. For somewhere to stay nearby, Villa Tomić—just slightly up the hill—makes for a peaceful and comfortable base with gorgeous views over the bay.
14. Paklena Beach (Vrboska)
Located on the Glavica Peninsula just east of Vrboska, this serene stretch of coast is a hidden gem for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. A short 500-meter walk through fragrant pine forests from the more bustling Soline Beach leads you to this secluded haven.
The beach features a mix of fine gravel and flat rocks, ideal for sunbathing, with a sandy seabed that makes entry into the crystal-clear, shallow waters a breeze. It’s a perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling, offering a peaceful alternative to the more crowded beaches in Hvar nearby.
While Paklena Beach lacks facilities like restrooms or food vendors, its untouched charm is part of the allure. Bring your own essentials and perhaps some water shoes for comfort.
For those seeking even more solitude, the nearby Balun and Tusno beaches offer clothing-optional sunbathing in equally picturesque settings.
15. Jagodna Beach (Jagodna)
Jagodna Beach may take a little effort to reach—it’s hidden down a narrow, winding road between Sveta Nedjelja and Ivan Dolac—but it rewards the determined with one of the most picturesque and peaceful swimming spots on the island.
Flanked by rust-colored cliffs and shaded by thick pine forest, this tucked-away cove feels like it belongs in a dream sequence. It’s also one of the few mostly sandy beaches on Hvar, a rare find on an island better known for its pebbles and rocky platforms.
The beach is small, intimate, and often quiet, especially outside of high season. The water is shallow and glass-clear, perfect for long swims and lazy floats. While there are a few rustic cabins and a seasonal beach bar nearby (thanks to the adjacent campsite), Jagodna still feels wonderfully off-the-beaten-path.
Getting here may test your GPS—or your scooter’s brakes—but once you arrive, you’ll wonder why everyone else hasn’t.
