  • Did you know Bulgaria is home to one of the largest and most important monasteries in the Balkans?

Located deep in the Rila mountains, Rila Monastery has stood here since the 10th Century, now a UNESCO Heritage Site. Founded by the hermit Ivan of Rila the monastery because the spiritual heart of Bulgaria preserving the country’s culture and identity through centuries of Ottoman rule.

Today it’s still an active monastery with monks living and worshipping here.

How to get to Rila: it’s around a 2-hour drive from Sofia making it a great day trip option from the capital. If you don’t have a car i’d arrange a guided private tour but shuttle buses also do the trip - guides are really easy here for the historical context.
