Need to Know Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is best visited in the dry season which runs from December – April. This is Costa Rica’s winter season so temperatures should be cooler and days sunnier and brighter.
We made the mistake of visiting in August in the wet season and I wouldn’t recommend it if you can help it. It was just way too wet to fully enjoy everything, some restaurants close for the season and there are way more bugs, especially mosquitoes.
I would also avoid December and January as these months are the peak visiting months of the high season which means high prices and crowds.
Getting to Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a small town on the Nicoya Peninsula located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
It’s accessible via plane, rental car, or transfer from San Jose, Liberia airport, and other key locations.
Opting for a domestic flight to Tambor airport nearby offers a swift and convenient way to get to Santa Teresa when coming from San Jose. This is the easiest and fastest option. Search all Costa Rica domestic flights below.
The region’s rugged terrain, characterized by unpaved and dirt roads, makes a 4×4 rental highly advisable for navigating Santa Teresa and the broader, nearby Guanacaste Region effectively.
This is especially true during the rainy season when considering the potential for impassable routes due to fast-flowing rivers crossing the roads.
If you’re planning a Costa Rica road trip itinerary, the best way to get around the country is by 4×4 rental car.
I generally use and highly recommend Discover Cars for car and SUV rental. They have the best deals, prices and customer service should anything go wrong. Book a Costa Rica car rental with Discover Cars.
Alternatively private and shared shuttles to Santa Teresa are also available from San Jose, Liberia Airport and even from and to other popular destinations.

Getting Around Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a small town and pretty much everything you need is located along its long main road. The main road follows the coast.
As everything is quite spread out in Santa Teresa it means having a vehicle for easy movement among its various parts, including the town center, its picturesque beaches, and nearby Malpais.
Renting a car at Liberia Airport or in San Jose ensures seamless access to Santa Teresa and facilitates exploration in the area and around Costa Rica.
If you’re not planning to rent a car for your trip, ATVs or motorbikes available for rent locally offer another practical option for navigating the area.
Amount of Time Needed in Santa Teresa
3-4 days in Santa Teresa allows you to fully enjoy what this serene surf village has to offer, though extending your stay is advisable for those looking to unwind further or engage in a surfing course.

Best Things to Do in Santa Teresa Costa Rica
Go Surfing
The number one thing to do in Santa Teresa is without a doubt go surfing. Santa Teresa is one of the best places for surfing enthusiasts in Costa Rica, catering to both novices and seasoned surfers.
Newcomers will find Playa Hermosa and Playa Carmen ideal for learning, while more experienced surfers can challenge themselves at Santa Teresa Beach and nearby spots.
For those new to surfing, investing in a surf lesson is a wise choice to get off to a good start. You’ll be taught the basics like how to stand up on the board before taking to the water with an instructor.
Among the various surf schools in the area, Pelican Surf Lessons is highly regarded- this is where we took a few refresher classes. Additionally, Surf by the Wave and Santa Teresa Surf Lessons are also well-recommended, offering both lessons and board rentals for those looking to refine their skills independently.
Visit Montezuma Falls
Montezuma Waterfall is a breathtaking series of three cascading waterfalls near Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. It’s actually located a 45-minute drive from Santa Teresa and just south of Cobano, so you’ll need your own wheels or to take a tour to get there.
To reach the first tier, begin near Hotel Amor de Mar and follow a 20-minute walk along the Montezuma River upstream. This path leads to the subsequent waterfalls, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip after the humid trek through the jungle.
During your visit, keep an eye out for the diverse local fauna of Costa Rica, including howler monkeys, river otters, sloths, toucans, and many more unique creatures.
Hire an ATV and Explore the Area
If you don’t have a rental car hiring an ATV is a must for exploring the best things to do in Santa Teresa. Even if you have a car, hiring an ATV might be a good bit of added fun in the area too.
Roads in Santa Teresa are dusty, uneven, and very muddy during the rainy season so this is the best way to get around.
Renting an ATV will give you access to some beautiful white sand beaches further away, both north and south of Santa Teresa.
You’ll also be able to reach some out-of-the-way waterfalls and even Mal Pais which has some even more unspoiled beaches and some outstanding restaurants.
There are many ATV rental spots around town- you will see them as you explore. The daily rate for renting an ATV is approximately $50-60, but longer stays may qualify for weekly or monthly discounts.
If you’re in Santa Teresa for a week make sure to enquire about a discount.
Spend time on the Beaches
Santa Teresa’s beaches are untamed, expansive, and breathtakingly beautiful.
They offer ample room for exploration and relaxation, making it easy to find a great spot free from crowds to unwind for the day.
It’s wise to bring along a picnic, as dining and drinking options along the beach are limited in most cases apart from Santa Teresa Beach which is located just by town.
This setting provides a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, enjoy the ocean, and possibly make new friends.
Here are the best beaches to seek out in Santa Teresa:
Santa Teresa Beach/Playa Santa Teresa – located just by town this is the busiest beach that’s great for experienced surfers, sunsets, and relaxation. Grab a smoothie bowl or coffee from a nearby cafe and head down.
Playa Cocal – Located a little further north of Santa Teresa beach.
Playa Hermosa– As the name suggests, this is a beautiful beach with a surf school and just a few rentals and hotels. It’s best to bring your own food and drink when visiting.
Carmen Beach – Just south of Santa Teresa, today Carmen Beach is an extension of Santa Teresa. Make sure not to miss The Bakery here, a brilliant spot of coffee and baked goods. Stock up and head to the beach.
Playa Mar Azul – A little beach that’s untouched near the Malpais tidal pools.
Playa Mal Pais- A stunning beach and the main one in Mal Pais. This is an excellent spot for escaping the crowds of Santa Teresa.
Go Boutique Shopping
One of the best things to do in Santa Teresa Costa Rica is actually to go shopping. Santa Teresa has some of the best local boutique stores in the country from local designers and artisans.
Santa Teresa boasts an impressive array of trendy surf shops, vibrant concept stores, and bohemian boutiques. These shops offer everything from local swimwear brands to distinctive home decor and essential surf and yoga gear.
Two of my top boutique recommendations are Pacific Wolf Factory (PAWO) for swimwear and resort wear and Studio Collectiva for exquisite, conceptual items.

Santa Teresa is a great place to be for wellness-forward yogis. Numerous hotels and resorts feature morning yoga sessions, wellness facilities, and dedicated yoga studios, providing everything required for maintaining your practice in this idyllic setting.

Note that during the rainy season, sunsets aren’t guaranteed but when they do appear they are spectacular.
Go Snorkeling on Isla Tortuga
Tortuga Island is a white-sand turquoise water haven, close to Tambor Beach. It’s a dream destination for beach lovers and snorkelers looking for nature and pristine water.
Visitors often embark on day trips from the mainland to snorkel and explore some of Costa Rica’s incredible marine wildlife, including angelfish, spotted eagle rays, porcupine fish, and occasionally whales and dolphins.

Visiting Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve offers a splendid day trip opportunity from Santa Teresa for those keen to immerse themselves in Costa Rica’s rich flora and fauna.
The reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including various monkey species, reptiles, sloths, and numerous birds, toucans included.
If you possess an ATV or a 4×4, you can independently explore Playa Cabo Blanco for the day.
However, opting for a guided tour booked online or arranged in town is also a viable choice. Based on personal experiences in Costa Rica, the insight and skills of a local guide are unparalleled for wildlife spotting.
Spend the Day in Malpais
Another amazing day trip in the area is to Malpais a little further south along the coast.
Taking a day trip from Santa Teresa to Malpais offers a delightful exploration of one of Costa Rica’s hidden gems. Nestled on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, Malpais is renowned for its serene beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant marine life.

For those interested in the rich biodiversity, Malpais offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving, where colorful fish and underwater landscapes await.
Hiking trails through the surrounding forests lead adventurers to secluded spots and offer chances to spot wildlife. With so many amazing nature-filled things to do, a day trip to Malpais from Santa Teresa is a must-do.
Go Horseriding on the Beach in Santa Teresa
Ending the day with a horseback ride at sunset on the beach is an unparalleled experience and a popular activity in the area.
Horse riding tours are typically organized for both the morning and evening by various local outfitters. With the option to keep groups small, riders can set their own pace, ensuring a comfortable experience.
