Why Visit Mostar?

Mostar is one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia & Herzegovina. It’s a destination that seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty into a small and manageable city. Mostar is also a fantastic place to visit for foodies. The food here with its Balkan and Ottoman influences is truly mouthwatering and the city has many amazing restaurants making choosing just a few difficult.

Mostar is the perfect destination for history and culture buffs, adventure seekers, or just anyone looking for a more under-the-radar travel destination. While Mostar itself is getting pretty popular, due to its proximity to places like Dubrovnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina is still very much a hidden gem.

How to Get to Mostar

There are many ways to get to Mostar depending on your starting point. Bosnia and Herzegovina is also a great place for a road trip. It’s easy to drive around and while roads could use improvement in some more rural areas, overall it’s easy.

By Car

We visited Mostar as part of a Balkans road trip. We rented a car in Dubrovnik before driving to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was super easy to drive around Bosnia and we had no issues whatsoever. If you’re also travelling around Croatia or Montenegro by car you can easily make the detour and get to Mostar by car.

By Public Transport and Tour

From Sarajevo – From Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia it’s relatively easy to get to Mostar. There are frequent local buses as well as two daily trains that’ll get you to Mostar.

It’s also possible to visit Mostar on a day tour from Sarajevo. This tour from Sarajevo is the best and will take you to Mostar as well as Sufi House, Počitelj, and Kravice Falls.

From Dubrovnik and Croatia – There are many buses that link Dubrovnik and other Croatian cities with Mostar. This means that getting the bus between these places is simple and easy. From Dubrovnik and Split, you can also take a private transfer to Mostar if you prefer this to local buses.

From Montenegro – There aren’t really any direct buses from Montenegro or Kotor to Mostar as they all loop around through Podgorica. Your best bet is to take a local private transfer between Kotor and Mostar. In general, however, the easiest way to get between Montenegro and Mostar is to drive. 

When you arrive in Mostar, you won’t need to use public transport or your rental car as the city is compact and very walkable. If you have a car, opting for a hotel with free parking is a great idea.

Walk across the Stari Most

Start your Mostar sightseeing at the town’s most famous site. The Stari Most (Old Bridge) is the symbol of Mostar, and it is one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe. You’ve probably already seen this bridge already, as pretty much any image of Mostar features it!

The bridge was originally built in the 16th century as a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture, and it was destroyed during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. However, it was rebuilt and reopened in 2004 mimicking the original architecture as much as possible.

Walking across the bridge is a must-do activity in Mostar. The Stari Most is not just a bridge; it’s a symbol of resilience and beauty, making it a must-see attraction when visiting Mostar.

But the Stari Most is not just a sight to behold; it’s also the stage for a heart-stopping tradition that has been passed down for generations—the famous diving spectacle.

Brave local divers jump from the bridge, plunging into the chilly waters below. The tradition is a testament to the city’s rich heritage that’s been going on for hundreds of years. Make sure to keep a lookout for a glimpse of the thrilling jump!

Visit the Old Town

In the streets immediately around Stari Most, you’ll find Mostar’s charming Old Town. Mostar’s Old Town is a maze of cobblestone, narrow streets, and alleyways that date back to the Ottoman era.

The streets are lined with traditional houses and shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, and local delicacies. The Old Town is also home to several historic mosques, including the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque and the Karadozbeg Mosque.

The best time to experience the Old Town is in the morning, just after the souvenir stores and market stalls have opened.

Go Hiking in the Surrounding Mountains

Upon arriving in Mostar you’ll notice that it’s surrounded by beautiful mountains. There are many different hikes you can do right from town or within a short drive of the center of Mostar. For those spending longer than one day in Mostar, going on a hike is a great option.

Mostar Canyon– located right outside Mostar, the trailhead begins here. You’ll be able to discover some of the picturesque trails here as well as enjoy some pretty extraordinary views of Mostar from a different vantage point.

Velez Mountain – Located a short drive outside Mostar, Velez Mountain offers a variety of hiking routes suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. The trails wind through lush forests, offering scenic views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

One popular route is the hike to Hum Peak, the highest point of Velez Mountain, which rewards hikers with panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Another must-visit museum in Mostar is the Museum Of War And Genocide Victims. As you can imagine this isn’t the most enjoyable experience in Mostar as such but it is a vital one.

The sobering museum sheds light on the city’s tumultuous past and also serves as a memorial to the victims of the Bosnian War. Its aim is to educate visitors about the atrocities that occurred during this dark period. Inside, you’ll find exhibits that showcase photographs, personal belongings, and stories of those affected by the conflict.

It’s an emotionally challenging visit, but a necessary one to gain a deeper understanding of the region and its people.

Witness the Power of the Image at the War Photo Exhibition

For those interested in the history of Mostar as well as photography, a visit here might be worth it. Located near the Stari Most, this thought-provoking exhibition showcases powerful images captured during the Bosnian War of the 1990s, offering a poignant reminder of the city’s tumultuous past.

Climb the Minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque

For those unafraid of heights, one of the must-do activities in Mostar is climbing the minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque. The tower of the mosque offers a unique perspective of the city and rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of Mostar.

You’ll be able to see Stari Most, the turquoise waters of the Neretva River, and the charming red-roofed houses that dot the city. The climb is steep and narrow, but the view from the top is worth it.

…and Visit the Mosque itself

The views aren’t the only thing you should visit Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque for. The mosque is one of the best examples of Ottoman mosque architecture in Mostar and looking at it you’ll wonder if you happen to have just teleported to Istanbul.

Make sure to go inside to take a look at its beautiful and colorful interior.

Visit the Other Mosques in Mostar

Apart from Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, there are many other mosques you can visit in Mostar. Karađoz Bey Mosque is another working mosque in Mostar with a large dome.

Nezir-agina mosque right next to the crooked Bridge is another charming yet rustic mosque that you can visit when wandering around the Old Town.

Visit Biscevic House

Another noteworthy site to consider when exploring what to do in Mostar is the Biscevic House, a well-preserved Ottoman-era residence that now serves as a museum.

It’s like stepping back in time as soon as you walk into this traditional Bosnian house. It has authentic architecture, intricately carved woodwork, and period furnishings.

Try the Local Cuisine

Mostar is known for its delicious cuisine, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can try local dishes such as ćevapi, burek, and dolma. Cevapi consists of succulent grilled meat, typically served with soft flatbread, onions, and a side of tangy kaymak.

Burek is another famous dish that you’ll also find in Croatia- a flaky pastry filled with savory ingredients such as meat, cheese, spinach, or potatoes. It’s a great on-the-go food.

I recommend trying the traditional Bosnian coffee, which is served in a small copper pot and is a must-try for coffee lovers.

Did you know that Bosnia makes some pretty good wines? When visiting Mostar, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Herzegovina Wine Route.

This scenic journey takes you through the rolling hills and picturesque vineyards of the region, where you can indulge in the rich flavors of locally produced wines. From full-bodied reds to crisp whites, the Herzegovina Wine Route offers a delightful array of wine-tasting experiences.

Mostar isn’t like many other travel destinations. It’s both beautiful in its own right yet also extremely scarred. The scar tissue here is fresh and you can feel it. The recent war that followed the split of former Yugoslavia took its toll on Mostar.

One of the best things to do in Mostar is to learn about its war and recent history. The best way to do this is with a local guide who can tell you exactly what happened here and its significance to the local people.

One of the most delightful culinary aspects of visiting Mostar is immersing yourself in the vibrant cafe culture that thrives in the city. Exploring the charming streets, you’ll find a plethora of inviting cafes where you can relax, people-watch, and soak in the local atmosphere.

One of the best things to do in Mostar is to simply take a seat on an outdoor terrace, order a traditional Bosnian coffee and let time slow down as you savor the moment.

Bosnian coffee is strong, thick, and syrupy and perfect for coffee lovers. The coffee is served in a traditional set. It’s made in a small copper pot and you pour it into the serving cup before drinking.

The cafe culture in Mostar is not just about the coffee though; it’s about the experience of leisurely enjoying your surroundings, engaging in conversations, and embracing the relaxed pace of life.

Cross Kriva Ćuprija (Crooked Bridge)

Probably my favorite bridge in Mostar is the Crooked Bridge. This bridge barely gets attention compared with the famous Stari Most so most of the time it isn’t at all busy. Unlike the Old Bridge, this one wasn’t destroyed in the war, making it a perfect example of Ottoman-style architecture.

There are many photo opportunities around this bridge as it’s just so pretty. One of the best views of it is from Kriva Ćuprija Hotel & Restaurant, so if you find you really like the view, make sure to consider staying here.

Wander Around the Old Bazaar

Mostar things to do also include a visit to the Old Bazaar. The Old Bazaar (Kujundžiluk) area of Mostar is one of the oldest areas of the city, dating back to the 16th Century. Here you’ll find cobbled, narrow alleyways filled with souvenir stands and shops. While most souvenirs sold are a little on the tacky side, there are a few gems to be found. 

It’s a wonderful place to walk around in and witness local life even if you don’t plan on buying anything. Walking the Old Bazaar’s narrow alleys is one of the best things to do in Mostar.

Bruce Lee Monument

Yes, there is a monument to Bruce Lee in Mostar. Not many people know as to why there’s a Bruce Lee monument but you’ll be able to see it for yourself in Park Zrinjevac. Find the exact location on Google Maps here.

While you’re here, a walk around the park is also worth it. You can also check out some of the abandoned buildings nearby too.

Visit the Franciscan Church and Monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul

Another charming religious building to visit in Mostar is the Franciscan Church and Monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul. Here you can admire the architecture of this Catholic Church, and explore the peaceful courtyard. Step inside to discover the rich history and religious significance of this sacred site.

See the Sniper Tower

One of the most intriguing and poignant sites to visit in Mostar is the Sniper Tower, a stark reminder of the city’s turbulent past during the Bosnian War. This abandoned high-rise building stands as a powerful symbol of the conflicts that once tore the region apart.

Climbing to the top of the Sniper Tower offers a unique vantage point over the city. From this elevated position, you can see the contrasts of Mostar—the ancient Stari Most bridge juxtaposed with the scars of conflict.

Seek out the Street Art

Make sure not to miss all the fantastic street art around Mostar. The murals are some of the best things to see in Mostar. In the last few years, murals have been used to brighten up old and decaying buildings damaged by war.

Visit Mostar Art Gallery

For those that love local art, a look into the Mostart Art Gallery is one of the top places to visit in Mostar. This contemporary art space showcases the vibrant and diverse artistic talents of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Work here ranges from paintings and sculptures to installations and multimedia creations.

The local gallery provides a platform for local artists to express their creativity and share their unique perspectives. The gallery has constantly changing exhibitions so it’s worth a look during your visit.

See the Peace Bell Tower

One of the best places to visit in Mostar Bosnia is the Peace Bell Tower a symbol of hope and reconciliation in the aftermath of the Bosnian War.

It’s located in the heart of the city, and this unique structure stands tall, reminding visitors of the importance of peace and unity. The best thing to do at the Mostar Peace Bell Tower is to climb it for panoramic views of Mostar’s charming old town and the surrounding picturesque landscape.

The Peace Bell Tower serves as a powerful reminder of the city’s resilience and the enduring spirit of its people as well as providing visitors with another vantage point from which to enjoy the city. 

Things to Do Near Mostar

While there is a wide range of great Mostar attractions and things to do, there are plenty of great places to visit not far from Mostar, Bosnia. Visiting all these or just a few make for fabulous day trips from Mostar which is why I recommend staying in Mostar for longer than just one day. 

It does help to have a car to visit these places and driving between them is short and easy. While it is possible to try to visit by public transport (for some) it will take a lot longer.

The other option is to take a tour. There are many day tours from Mostar that will take you to Kravice Waterfalls, Počitelj, and Blagaj in one day making the whole trip seamless. Visit Kravice Waterfalls

When it comes to natural beauty, Kravice Waterfalls is a true gem that should not be missed during your visit to Mostar. Located just a short drive away, these cascading waterfalls are a breathtaking sight to behold. A complete amphitheater of cascading water in a beautifully, green natural park.

Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a stunning panorama of turquoise-colored pools and cascades that plunge into a series of picturesque waterfalls.

You might be thinking ‘I just visited a similar waterfall in Croatia’. You’ll be right, Kravice Waterfalls are quite similar to Krka National Park and even Plitvice National Park but there’s one difference- you can still swim at Kravice Waterfalls.

Apart from savoring the site itself, one of the draws to Kravice is taking a dip and cooling off in the refreshing water, especially in summer. The water is quite chilly but works wonders on a hot and sunny day.

Make sure to arrive at Kravice Waterfalls as early as possible (or even late in the evening) as once the tour groups arrive it can get very crowded. Entry costs 10 BAM. (Less in the off-season).

Take a Trip to Počitelj

Počitelj is a UNESCO World Heritage site just a short drive from the city of Mostar. This medieval village is an absolute hidden gem so make sure not to miss it from your Bosnia itinerary.

Strolling through the narrow streets of Počitelj feels like a journey through history, with its well-preserved stone houses, ancient mosques, and intricate architectural details. Some of the buildings you shouldn’t miss are the stunning medieval fortress perched atop a hill and the Haji-Ali Mosque, a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture.

The best thing to do in Počitelj is just to walk around and enjoy what feels like a step into a living museum. The village is so charming and has so much culture and heritage. Make sure to also check out the amazing views as you walk through the streets.

Visit Mystic Blagaj

A short drive from Mostar Bosnia lies the enchanting village of Blagaj, a hidden treasure that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and historical significance. Located at the base of a towering cliff, Blagaj is home to the mesmerizing Blagaj Tekke, a 600-year-old Dervish monastery situated by the turquoise waters of the Buna River.

Head inside the monastery to discover its rich history, cultural ornaments, and charming rooms before making the most of the area around the monastery. Cross the river and admire the gigantic cliffs and the slow-flowing river that provide a stunning backdrop for the monastery.

The teahouses right on the river are also a lovely place for grabbing a traditional Blagaj tea before leaving.

You can get from Mostar to Blagaj by driving yourself, taking a local bus, or by organized tour.

There are many great places to stay in Mostar. There aren’t too many luxury hotels or design hotels but Mostar does have many traditional-style guesthouses and hotels that are perfect for a more local experience.

Where to Eat in Mostar

Restaurant Šadrvan– Probably one of the most popular restaurants for visitors in Mostar, you’ll see this spot recommended more than once. The truth, however, is that the food here is really local and really good.

It’s a little more costly compared to some other places but it’s the perfect place to sample some stable Bosnian dishes like ćevapi and japrak. The restaurant decor and atmosphere are pretty cool too. Definitely a must.

Food House Mostar – One of the best restaurants in Mostar. Come here for traditional Bosnian food as well as grilled and fried meat and fish. Vegetarians rejoice too, they have a really good selection of veggie dishes like baked aubergines or the yummy veggie platter.

Grill Centar Mostar– A little outside the old town but one of the best local spots for ćevapi and grilled meat. It’s a simple no-thrills place but the food is great.

Fabrika Coffee Mostar– One of the best specialty coffee spots in Mostar. Choose between your typical Bosnian coffee or a cappuccino.
