Where to Stay in Dubrovnik
While most know about Dubrovnik’s beautiful Old Town, there are actually a few different places to stay in Dubrovnik. Each area has it’s own unique characteristics that are worth considering when choosing a place to stay.
If you want a large luxury hotel with sea views you might want to consider Ploča, just outside the Old Town or perhaps Lapad for a more relaxed stay away from the crowds. You will find most of Dubrovnik’s luxury hotels outside the Old Town.
Here’s a summary of all the main areas in Dubrovnik to consider when choosing a place to stay:
Old Town (Stari Grad)– The Old Town is the heart of Dubrovnik, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, narrow streets, and historic sites. Staying within the city walls allows you to be close to major attractions like the city walls, Rector’s Palace, and Onofrio’s Fountain.
Accommodation in the Old Town is more boutique and as there isn’t too much choice, the hotels here tend to book up really fast so make sure to book early.
Note that the old town has a lot of cobblestoned streets and steep staircases. Cars aren’t allowed inside either. It’s not the easiest place to pull a suitcase through. If you have a lot of luggage I’d recommend choosing a hotel outside the Old Town for ease.
Ploce – The area is just outside the Old Town walls to the east. It offers stunning views of the city walls and the Adriatic Sea. It’s a quieter area compared to the bustling Old Town but still within walking distance of all the major attractions.
Lapad – If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere away from the crowds, Lapad is a popular residential area located about 3 kilometres from the Old Town. It has a lovely promenade, beautiful beaches, and a variety of luxury accommodations.
Babin Kuk– This peninsula, located close to Lapad, is known for its upscale hotels, beautiful beaches, and lush greenery. It’s a quieter area but still offers good access to both the Old Town and Lapad.
Gruz– The main harbour area where all the large ferries come in. It’s not the most attractive place to stay and there aren’t many luxury hotels in this area but it is convenient for the port.
The Best Luxury Hotels in Dubrovnik
The Pucic Palace
The Pucić Palace is one of the best luxury hotels in Dubrovnik Old Town. Nestled within the ancient walls, this heritage stone palace is timeless, elegant and staying here allows you to experience a bygone era.
The beautifully restored interiors are opulent, traditional and grand yet rooms have all the modern conveniences to make your stay a faultless one.
The Pucic Palace is a small boutique hotel so make sure to book your stay well in advance as the few rooms book up very quickly. Inside the hotel, you’ll also find two spectacular restaurants, serving modern Mediterranean cuisine.
Hotel Excelsior
Located along the shores of Dubrovnik just a few minutes walk from the Old Town, Hotel Excelsior is probably Dubrovnik’s most luxurious choice. However it’s a property of contrast.
While the hotel seems super modern (and it is for the most part), the oldest wing dates back to 1913. Here you’ll find rooms with much more of a historic character with carefully-chosen antiques and traditional-style furniture.
The hotel boasts incredible sea views and views towards the enchanting Old Town of Dubrovnik. You can easily stroll down to the beach and take a dip in the warm waters.
What truly sets Hotel Excelsior apart is its commitment to wellness and rejuvenation, offering a world-class luxury spa and wellness center. There’s a wonderful indoor pool, Finnish sauna, and Turkish bath and the spa offers many different luxurious, signature treatments for you to indulge in.
Dining is also incredible- you can feast on fresh lobster and scallops at Prora Restaurant as the sun goes down over the old town.
Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik
Nautical-themed Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik is another spectacular choice for where to stay in Dubrovnik. Modern and bright with sleek design that plays with light and texture, this is a great stay for the design inclined.
Overlooking the cerulean Adriatic, the Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik offers a breathtaking retreat like no other. Its exceptional facilities include a private beach, a chic rooftop terrace, and world-class dining venues that tantalise the palate with culinary delights.
Rooms and suites are very homely and comfortable and stick to earthy colours throughout.
Make sure not to miss the spa where you can pop in for a relaxing treatment after a day of exploring.
Palace Natali
One of my personal favourite luxury properties in Dubrovnik is Palace Natali. This unique property, housed in a heritage stone palace beautifully plays with modern decor in a traditional building. The contrasts in style make it one of the most exciting places to stay in Dubrovnik.
Located just 1km from Sulic Beach, one of the best in Dubrovnik, Palace Natali is quiet and peaceful with gorgeous gardens and sea views. Rooms and suites are design-focused, each one different from the other.
The rooftop terrace is one of the best spots to watch the sunset with a glass of local wine in hand and the dining and spa options on site are also splendid.
If you’re looking for a unique, historical stay in Dubrovnik, make sure not to miss Palace Natali.
Hotel Dubrovnik Palace
Sleek, modern and minimalistic, Hotel Dubrovnik Palace is another wonderful option with a great oceanfront location in Lapad. It takes just 20 minutes to get to Dubrovnik’s Old Town from this gorgeously green peninsula.
The hotel has its own private beach- ideal for lounging on during those long summer afternoons as well as it’s own scuba diving centre. There are four different restaurants, outdoor pools, a pool bar, a tennis court and a very good spa and wellness centre.
If you’re doing a Croatia road trip, you’ll be pleased to know this property offers free private parking too.
Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik
One of the grandest and most Wes Anderson-esque hotels in Croatia, the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing. Classic, contemporary and lavish, a stay at this luxury hotel will add something special to your Croatia trip.
The hotel is located just a stone’s throw from the City Walls and Pile Gate and the building dates back to 1897. Rooms here are bright and airy and some of them have beautiful views towards Lovrijenac Fortress.
There’s a top spa on site, a good restaurant and an indoor swimming pool. It’s also just minutes from Sulic Beach, one of the most beautiful rocky coves in Dubrovnik.
On top of that, with the Hilton Honors program, you can book your luxury stay in Dubrovnik with points.
Villa Dubrovnik
For those looking for a chic place to stay within walking distance of the Old Town, the ocean-facing Villa Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful luxury properties in Dubrovnik.
The whole property is extremely light, bright and modern with floor-to-ceiling windows in every room and suite. Sea views welcome you wherever you decide to relax- most guest rooms and suites have an ocean-facing, private balcony.
Dining here is also a real treat. Make sure not to miss the rooftop, Proscuitto and Wine Bar for romantic sunset views over the city. Lunch at the Al Fresco Garden Bistro is also delicious and to some seriously heady sea views.
Villa Dubrovnik also has a good spa, well-equipped gym and indoor pool if you prefer a less salty alternative to the Adriatic.
Rixos Premium Dubrovnik
Another premium property perched along the azure shores of Dubrovnik’s coastline, Rixos is a special blend of coastal tranquillity and contemporary sophistication.
Located on the Lapad peninsula, right on the water, this large resort is perfect for those that want to spend their time in Dubrovnik well- a mixture of the best of Dubrovnik’s sights as well as relaxing on a private beach, sipping cocktails.
This modern gem has everything you might want from a great property- large and bright rooms with sea views, great dining, service, free wi-fi and a brilliant spa. The hotel offers a refined escape for travellers seeking opulence and relaxation.
Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel
This luxury and idyllic retreat may seem a little far from Dubrovnik’s Stari Grad on the map but it’s here on the Babin Kuk Peninsula where you can really retreat.
Overlooking the crystalline waters of the Adriatic Sea, the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel makes a haven for travellers seeking both relaxation and cultural exploration.
The well-appointed rooms provide a seamless fusion of comfort and style, many boasting breathtaking sea views from private balconies. There’s direct access to a pristine, private, pebble beach and a collection of outdoor pools, that’s just paradise for a summer stay.
The hotel’s fine dining restaurants showcase the rich flavours of the Mediterranean, and its attentive staff ensures a truly personalized experience.
Royal Blue Hotel
On the western shores of Lapad you’ll find Royal Blue Hotel, a classy hotel/resort in Dubrovnik. The Royal Blue Hotel is a chic haven that presents a refined blend of contemporary luxury and Adriatic allure.
The design here is a good combination of modern and classic; rooms and suites and have classic, elegant touches while restaurants and outdoor areas tend to be quite modern. The hotel’s stylish rooms, many with private balconies overlooking the azure waters, provide an exquisite backdrop for relaxation.
Even though you’ll be exploring Dubrovnik for much of your stay, there’s plenty to do at the hotel from great Mediterranean dining to lounging by the pool, taking swims in the ocean and making the most of the spa treatments.
Royal Princess Hotel
For lovers of classic and contemporary decor, make sure not to miss the luxurious Royal Princess Hotel. Located on a quiet coastline in Babin Kuk surrounded by pine forests, this hotel is quite small in size, giving it a more boutique feel.
Book a luxurious room or suite overlooking the Adriatic and spend your days gazing out at the ocean, relaxing and watching the sunset. To make your vacation even more relaxing, there’s a spa where you can enjoy luxury massages, two pools and a steam room.
The hotel is also well connected to the Old Town of Dubrovnik, a local bus will take you there in just 20 minutes.
Royal Princess Hotel makes a lovely, relaxing base for your time in Dubrovnik, one that’s surrounded by nature.
