I’ve visited Athens numerous times over the years and have stayed in everything from boutique hotels in the historic center to luxury resorts along the coast. While first-time visitors will often gravitate towards the Acropolis and the city’s major sights, some of Athens’ most rewarding neighborhoods lie beyond the obvious tourist districts.

In this guide, I’ve broken down the best areas to stay in Athens and highlighted the properties I’d personally stay at in each. If you’re like me, where you stay can shape your entire experience of a city. Athens has an exciting hotel scene right now, with everything from design-forward boutique properties tucked into neoclassical buildings to polished luxury hotels with front-row views of the Acropolis.

While location matters, I always look for the complete package: thoughtful design, excellent service, a strong sense of place, and the feeling that returning to the hotel at the end of the day is part of the experience, not just a place to sleep.

These are the Athens hotels I recommend most often and the ones I’d happily book myself again.

The Dolli – One of the most sought-after addresses in Athens, The Dolli pairs elegant contemporary interiors with arguably the city’s most spectacular Acropolis views. The rooftop pool alone is worth the booking, especially at sunset when the Parthenon seems close enough to touch.

Monument Hotel – Housed inside a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion in Psirri, Monument is intimate, design-focused, and full of character. With just a handful of rooms, it offers a quieter, more personal stay while placing you within walking distance of Athens’ best cafés, bars, and restaurants.

Hotel Grand Bretagne – Athens’ grande dame remains one of the city’s most iconic hotels. Overlooking Syntagma Square, it combines old-world elegance, impeccable service, and a rooftop restaurant with sweeping views across the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill.

Shila Athens – Part boutique hotel, part creative hideaway, Shila feels more like staying in a stylish Athenian residence than a traditional hotel. 10am Lofts – For anyone who prefers apartment-style stays without sacrificing design, 10AM Lofts is one of Athens’ best-kept secrets. Set inside a converted industrial building in Gazi, the spacious lofts feature soaring ceilings, contemporary interiors, and fully equipped kitchens, making them ideal for longer stays or anyone wanting a little more room to spread out while remaining close to the city’s best restaurants, bars, and historic sights.

One&Only Aesthesis – Located on the Athens Riviera, One&Only Aesthesis delivers a resort experience that feels worlds away from the city center. Expect private bungalows, beachfront access, excellent restaurants, and a glamorous mid-century aesthetic inspired by the golden age of the Athenian coast.

What is the Best Area to Stay in Athens?

The best area to stay in Athens depends on several factors, and it’s not always as straightforward as booking the most central hotel you can find. The neighborhood, time of year, day of the week, and the type of trip you’re planning can all dramatically shape your experience of the city.

For first-time visitors spending a night or two in Athens before heading to the islands, central neighborhoods like Monastiraki, Syntagma, Plaka, and Psirri make a lot of sense. You’ll be within walking distance of the Acropolis, major sights, restaurants, bars, and transport connections, making it easy to maximize a short stay.

That said, central Athens can be surprisingly intense, particularly during the summer months. The city center is packed with visitors, traffic can be relentless, and the heat often amplifies the noise and energy. Areas like Monastiraki and Psirri stay lively well into the early hours, especially on weekends when bars and rooftop venues fill up, and music carries through the narrow streets.

If you are here to join the fun, ultimately, you might want to stay in the center.

If you’re staying in Athens for more than a few days, working remotely, or simply prefer a quieter experience, I’d recommend looking beyond the historic center. Neighborhoods such as Kolonaki (my favorite), Pangrati, Koukaki, or even the Athens Riviera offer a more relaxed pace while still allowing easy access to the city’s main attractions.

Having been to Athens 4+ times now, I’d say that if you’re making Athens a brief stop before a ferry departure, staying centrally is hard to beat, particularly mid-week. But if Athens is the destination itself, choosing a slightly calmer neighborhood can make the city far more enjoyable.

Best Areas to Stay in Athens, Greece

Choosing the right neighborhood in Athens, I think, is more important than in many other cities, and it can make a huge difference to your Athens experience. Some areas put you steps from the Acropolis and the city’s busiest restaurants and bars, while others offer a quieter, more local atmosphere away from the crowds.

Whether you’re visiting for a quick city break, a longer stay, or simply passing through on your way to the islands, these are the best areas to stay in Athens and the best luxury and boutique hotels in each.

City Center & Psirri

If it’s your first time in Athens or you’re only staying for a night or two, the City Center and Psirri are hard to beat. You’ll be within walking distance of major sights including the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Monastiraki Square, and countless restaurants, cafés, and rooftop bars.

Psirri, just next door, in particular, has become one of Athens’ most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its creative energy, street art, cocktail bars, and late-night atmosphere.

The trade-off is noise. During summer and on weekends especially, the area can be crowded, busy, and surprisingly loud well into the early hours, so it’s best suited to travelers who want to be in the middle of the action rather than those seeking a peaceful retreat.

Having said that, though, peace is possible if you choose the right stay. All the best hotels in Athens center will have soundproofing and provide a restful respite from the action outside.

The Best Hotels in City Center & Psirri

Monument Hotel – Occupying a meticulously restored neoclassical building, Monument Hotel offers one of the most characterful stays in central Athens. Original architectural details sit alongside warm, contemporary interiors, creating a refined retreat that feels worlds away from the bustle outside. My top choice.

Mona Athens – Mona has quickly become one of Athens’ most talked-about boutique stays, attracting a creative crowd with its striking interiors and laid-back atmosphere. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, while the rooftop provides a front-row seat to the city’s ever-present Acropolis views.

Perianth Hotel – With its clean-lined aesthetic and prime location near Monastiraki Square, Perianth is a smart choice for travelers who want modern comforts in the heart of historic Athens. The hotel balances contemporary design with easy access to the city’s landmarks, dining scene, and nightlife.

The Foundry Suites – Hidden within Psirri, this boutique property offers loft-style suites, leafy courtyards, and rooftop Acropolis views. It’s particularly well-suited to longer stays thanks to its spacious layouts and apartment-style setup.

Monastiraki

Monastiraki sits at the heart of historic Athens and is one of the most convenient neighborhoods for sightseeing. From here, you can walk to the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka, Psirri, and many of the city’s most important landmarks within minutes.

The area is known for its bustling squares, rooftop restaurants, market stalls, and lively atmosphere that lasts from morning until late at night. It’s an excellent base for first-time visitors who want to be in the center of everything, though the constant foot traffic, street noise, and crowds can feel overwhelming during the peak summer season and on weekends.

The Best Hotels in Monastiraki

The Dolli – Few hotels in Athens make such an immediate impression. Set inside a beautifully restored historic mansion, The Dolli combines residential-style elegance with one of the most enviable locations in the city. The interiors are filled with art, marble, and carefully curated furnishings, while many of the public spaces frame extraordinary views of the Acropolis.

A for Athens – Sitting directly on Monastiraki Square, this long-standing favorite remains one of the best locations in the city. While it leans more boutique than ultra-luxury, its rooftop bar and uninterrupted Acropolis views are hard to beat.

Syntagma

If you’re looking for the most central base in Athens, Syntagma is hard to beat. Anchored by Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament, the neighborhood sits at the crossroads of the city’s major attractions, making it easy to reach the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Kolonaki on foot.

It’s also Athens’ premier shopping district, with Ermou Street, designer boutiques, international brands, and department stores all within a few minutes’ walk. While the area is busy throughout the day, it generally feels more polished and business-like than neighboring Monastiraki and Psirri, making it a great choice if you want convenience, luxury hotels, and excellent shopping on your doorstep.

The Best Hotels in Syntagma

Hotel Grande Bretagne – The most iconic old-world hotel in Athens, Hotel Grande Bretagne has been welcoming dignitaries, celebrities, and discerning travelers for more than a century. Overlooking Syntagma Square, it delivers classic luxury with grand interiors, exceptional service, a renowned spa, and a rooftop terrace that frames some of the city’s best Acropolis views.

King George – Sitting beside its legendary sister property, King George offers a more intimate take on five-star hospitality. The rooms are elegant and understated, while the hotel’s standout feature is Tudor Hall, a fine-dining restaurant with panoramic views stretching across the Acropolis and historic center.

Ergon House – For a more contemporary stay, Ergon House combines boutique accommodation with one of Athens’ most exciting culinary concepts. Plaka & Makriyanni

For many travelers, Plaka and Makriyanni are the most atmospheric places to stay in Athens. Located at the foot of the Acropolis, these neighboring districts are filled with neoclassical buildings, pedestrian lanes, hidden courtyards, and some of the city’s most iconic views.

Days here are spent wandering historic streets, visiting ancient sites, and lingering over long meals on shaded terraces. While the areas attract plenty of visitors, they generally feel calmer and more charming than nearby Monastiraki.

They’re particularly well-suited to first-time visitors, couples, and anyone wanting to immerse themselves in Athens’ historic heart while remaining within walking distance of the city’s major attractions.

The only drawback is that this is one of the most visited parts of Athens. During the summer months, Plaka’s narrow streets can become extremely crowded throughout the day, especially around the Acropolis entrances and major landmarks, so expect plenty of foot traffic during peak season.

If you want to move away from the crowds of Plaka, I’d suggest staying in Makriyanni, which is a little further south, or even Koukaki.

The Best Hotels in Plaka & Makriyanni

AthensWas – Perfectly positioned on Dionysiou Areopagitou, Athens’ most elegant pedestrian avenue, AthensWas places you just moments from the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum. The hotel pairs sleek mid-century-inspired design with spacious rooms and a rooftop restaurant that enjoys some of the most impressive views in the city.

A77 Suites – Tucked away on a quiet street in Plaka, A77 Suites offers a more intimate and exclusive experience. The beautifully restored townhouse houses just a handful of suites, combining personalized service, refined interiors, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s surprisingly rare in the heart of historic Athens.

Herodion Hotel – A long-time favorite in Makriyanni thanks to its exceptional location below the Acropolis. While it sits more in the upscale category than true luxury, the rooftop jacuzzis and direct access to the city’s major archaeological sites make it a great choice.

Koukaki

If you’re researching where to stay in Athens and want a neighborhood that balances convenience with a more local atmosphere, Koukaki is one of the city’s best options.

Located just south of the Acropolis, it puts you within walking distance of many of Athens’ major attractions while feeling noticeably calmer than nearby Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma.

The neighborhood is known for its excellent cafés, wine bars, independent restaurants, and residential character, giving you a chance to experience a more everyday side of Athens. It’s particularly well-suited to longer stays, repeat visitors, and travelers who want to be close to the action without being surrounded by crowds from morning until night.

That said, Koukaki’s residential character means you’ll find fewer standout luxury hotels here than in neighborhoods like Syntagma or Plaka. The trade-off is a strong selection of stylish apartments, serviced residences, and short-term rentals.

The Best Hotels & Rentals in Koukaki

Coco-mat Athens BC – Arguably Koukaki’s standout luxury hotel, Coco-Mat Athens BC combines contemporary design, wellness-focused amenities, and one of the most impressive rooftop pools in Athens.

The Shadow of Athena – This stylish three-bedroom villa is one of Koukaki’s best rental options for families and groups. Sleeping up to nine guests, it offers plenty of space, contemporary interiors, and a location within walking distance of both the Acropolis and the neighborhood’s excellent cafés and restaurants.

Leucothea – Ideal for couples, Leucothea is a bright, contemporary apartment in the heart of Koukaki. The one-bedroom space pairs minimalist interiors with a private balcony and places guests within walking distance of the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Plaka, and some of the neighborhood’s best cafés and restaurants.

Kolonaki

Kolonaki is my favorite neighborhood in Athens and the area I’d choose for a longer stay (2/3+ nights) in the city. Elegant, leafy, and noticeably more refined than the historic center, it’s filled with designer boutiques, independent fashion stores, excellent coffee shops, wine bars, and some of Athens’ best restaurants.

The atmosphere feels distinctly local, with residents lingering over coffee in shaded squares and stylish cafés rather than crowds of tourists rushing between landmarks.

One thing to keep in mind is the terrain. Kolonaki sits on the slopes of Lycabettus Hill, and the higher you go, the steeper the streets become. In some areas, you’ll encounter long staircases, sharp inclines, and surprisingly challenging walks, particularly during the summer heat. For travelers with strollers, mobility concerns, or anyone who prefers flat terrain, it may not be the most practical choice.

That said, if you’re looking for one of the most sophisticated places to stay in Athens, with a more residential atmosphere and easy access to great shopping, dining, and culture, Kolonaki is hard to beat.

The Best Hotels in Kolonaki

Shila Athens – One of the most distinctive boutique stays in Athens, Shila feels more like a beautifully curated private residence than a hotel. Set inside a restored mansion, each suite is individually designed with vintage furnishings, art-filled interiors, and plenty of character, creating an intimate retreat in the heart of Kolonaki.

The Modernist Athens – Housed in a former embassy building, The Modernist brings Scandinavian-inspired simplicity to one of Athens’ most elegant neighborhoods. Rooms are bright and understated, while the rooftop terrace and excellent location make it a favorite among design-conscious travelers.

Periscope – A long-standing Kolonaki favorite, Periscope offers sleek contemporary rooms and a quieter atmosphere than many of the city’s larger hotels. Its location places guests within easy walking distance of Kolonaki’s boutiques, galleries, cafés, and restaurants.

Athens Riviera

The Athens Riviera offers a completely different experience from staying in the city center. Stretching along the coastline south of Athens, this area is home to beaches, marinas, waterfront restaurants, and some of Greece’s most impressive resort hotels.

While I wouldn’t recommend basing yourself here if your primary goal is sightseeing, as you’ll be some distance from the Acropolis and Athens’ historic neighborhoods, it can be a fantastic addition to a longer Greece itinerary.

If you’re returning to Athens after island hopping and have a couple of nights before your flight home, the Riviera is one of my favorite places to stay. Instead of diving straight back into the city’s traffic and crowds, you can spend a few days by the sea, enjoying resort-style facilities, beach clubs, pools, spas, and sunset dinners overlooking the Saronic Gulf.

It offers a more relaxed ending to a Greek vacation while still keeping you within easy reach of Athens International Airport.

The Best Hotels in Athens Riviera

One&Only Aesthesis – The newest luxury resort to make waves on the Athens Riviera, One&Only Aesthesis brings a glamorous, mid-century-inspired aesthetic to Glyfada’s waterfront. Expect private bungalows, lush gardens, excellent dining, and a beach club atmosphere that feels far removed from the city despite being less than an hour from central Athens.

Four Seasons Astir Palace – The benchmark for luxury on the Athens Riviera, Four Seasons Astir Palace occupies its own private peninsula in Vouliagmeni. With multiple beaches, world-class restaurants, a superb spa, and exceptional service, it’s the closest Athens comes to a true international resort destination.

Cape Sounio – Set beside the legendary Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounio enjoys one of the most dramatic settings in Greece. The resort’s pine-covered grounds, private villas, and sea views are impressive enough, but waking up to views of the ancient temple across the hillside is what makes a stay here truly memorable.

Ace Hotel & Swim Club Athens – Bringing the brand’s signature creative energy to the Athens Riviera, Ace Hotel & Swim Club offers a more relaxed and design-driven alternative to the area’s grand resorts. Located in Glyfada, the property channels the Riviera’s 1960s and 70s heyday with retro-inspired interiors, a lively pool scene, excellent food and drink offerings, and easy access to the beach.
