Checking In: Stonehaven House, Hemel-en-Aarde
Stonehaven House is the kind of countryside stay that exceeds expectations. Set in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in the Western Cape and managed by Perfect Hideaways, this private villa combines the privacy of a rental home with the polish of a boutique retreat.
Surrounded by vineyards, mountains, and fynbos landscapes, it is perfectly placed for exploring one of South Africa’s top wine regions while still feeling completely removed from it all.
After spending a couple of nights here, what stayed with me most was how effortlessly it balances style, comfort, and a genuine connection to the land. If you’re searching for unique holiday rentals in Hermanus or for where to stay in Hemel-en-Aarde, keep reading for the perfect escape.

Stonehaven House
Stonehaven House is more than a private villa rental—it is part of a private working farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, which gives the stay a real sense of place. While it very much is a polished house dropped into the countryside, it is somehow connected to the land around it.
Reached via a gravel road just outside Hermanus, the property has a peaceful, tucked-away feel while still being close to many of the valley’s best wine farms and restaurants. There are vegetable gardens, walking trails through indigenous fynbos, and a slower, grounded atmosphere that feels tied to the rhythms of farm life. Stonehaven also produces its own cosmetics and fynbos honey, adding another layer of authenticity to the experience.
The house itself is designed for indoor-outdoor living, with a large open-plan kitchen, outdoor braai and pizza oven, and plenty of spaces to gather after a day exploring the valley.
Although most of my time was spent outside, the interiors are equally inviting—warm, cosy, and filled with artwork and furnishings that reflect the natural surroundings. The owner is an artist, and that creative influence can be felt throughout the home without it ever feeling overdone.
There is also a strong sustainability element to the property. Much of the home operates off-grid, with water sourced from the farm itself and backup energy systems in place, which only adds to the sense of being immersed in the landscape rather than separated from it.
Staying here felt less like renting a house and more like stepping into a private estate where the landscape, lifestyle, and home all work together.

Location
Stonehaven House sits in one of the Western Cape’s most underrated locations, right in the heart of the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley. It’s far enough into the countryside to feel removed, yet close enough to civilisation that lunch reservations and wine tastings remain wonderfully easy.
The house is a short drive from many of the valley’s leading estates, including Hamilton Russell, Newton Johnson, Creation and Bouchard Finlayson, while Hermanus is roughly 20 minutes away for galleries, coastal walks, restaurants, and whale-season sightings.
I found this balance to be Stonehaven’s greatest luxury. Mornings were slow and silent, but by afternoon, I was tasting Chardonnay in one of South Africa’s finest wine regions. By sunset, back in the pool with a glass of Pinot Noir.
It’s worth noting that you need a car to get to Stonehaven House and to get around the area. I rented mine in Cape Town, of course, via Discover Cars, my go-to platform for finding competitive rates worldwide. Opt for a renowned agency and full-coverage insurance, which can save you headaches down the line. Find the best car rental deals.

The Spaces & Amenities
Stonehaven House sleeps eight guests across four ensuite bedrooms, making it ideal for families or a polished group getaway. Bedrooms are thoughtfully private, while the communal spaces are made for long lunches, late dinners, games, and long conversations.
The kitchen is large, fully equipped, and genuinely usable – we cooked on my first night here. There is a generous living area, smart TV lounge, study space, shaded outdoor seating, barbecue options, and a pizza oven.
What elevates the stay, however, are the restorative extras: a yoga room, natural swimming pool, wood-fired Kol Kol hot tub, fireplaces, and enough outdoor space to disappear for an hour with a book and no explanation.

Design
The design style leans modern, elevated country house, mixing rustic furniture with contemporary finishes and modern amenities. It feels polished but comfortable, with natural textures, warm tones, stone and timber details, and large windows that keep the focus on the landscape.
Traditional farmhouse elements are balanced with updated conveniences, giving the house a relaxed, easy feel rather than anything overly formal. By day, the interiors feel bright and open; by night, with the fireplaces lit, it becomes warm and cosy.

Perfect Hideaways
Perfect Hideaways is one of South Africa’s best-known private villa and homestay collections, specialising in design-led properties that offer more character and privacy than a traditional hotel stay. Their portfolio spans the Western Cape, Winelands, coast, bush escapes, and a handful of standout international homes, with a focus on places that feel distinctive rather than generic.
What sets them apart is their curation. They do not list hundreds of interchangeable rentals like stay, Airbnb. Instead, each property tends to have a clear identity—architectural homes, restored farmhouses, beach villas, family estates, and countryside retreats chosen for style, setting, and sense of place.
Stonehaven House fits naturally within that approach. It combines strong design, privacy, and a connection to the surrounding landscape, which is exactly the kind of stay Perfect Hideaways is known for.
They also operate more like a travel concierge than a booking platform, helping with local recommendations, chefs, wellness treatments, and tailored experiences. For travellers who want the independence of a private home without losing service or standards, they fill that gap well.
