Can You Bring Essential Oils on a Plane
Firstly, let’s tackle one of the most asked questions: essential oils on airplane. Are we even allowed to take essential oils on planes? Technically they are liquids so there can be some issues and doubts around this. The first thing to check is your country’s travel and security requirements. As they are different in each country this is a difficult question to answer in a broad way.
Can I bring essential oils on a plane? Yes you generally can.
In the US, the general TSA rule is that you are allowed to travel with liquids as long as they contain less than 3.4 ounces of liquid. Essential oils containers contain about 0.5 ounces of liquid so it’s generally fine. You might want to check however, if you have an especially large essential oil container.
Just make sure to pack your essential oils safely, in a reusable bag or container so that they don’t spill during the flight.
In the UK, flying with essential oils is a little trickier. All liquids containers have to be under 100ml and essential oil containers generally are. Just make sure that your essential oils can all fit into the small, clear security liquids bag you need to use at security.
As you only get one clear bag per person, you might want to limit traveling with too many essential oils from the UK as well, you need space for your cosmetics too.
If you’re traveling with a checked bag, I’d put most of the essential oils in there, leaving just one or two in your carry-on for in-flight use.

The Best Essential Oils for Travel
Traveling with essential oils can enhance your health while away from home. They can promote better sleep, prevent and help digestive ailments, and nausea and help with things like insect bites. Over time I’ve worked out that traveling with these essential oils can make so much difference to your overall health and travel experience.
When it comes to essential oils, lavender is one of the most popular and a great one to start with if you’re new to essential oils.
Not only does it smell so good, but using a lavender essential oil prior to a long flight or after a long day can help to relax the body and bring you closer to a deep slumber. It can help to relieve all kinds of stress and anxiety, which really makes it one of my personal favourites when traveling.
It’s also known to relieve headaches when used in a diffuser and inhaled and by mixing a few drops with a carrier oil it can do wonders for reducing itching and swelling from bug bites- a perfect all-rounder essential oil for traveling.
Ginger oil is one of those oils with a plethora of health benefits, especially for the modern traveller, yet it hasn’t seen such popularity- something I’m really having trouble understanding.
Ginger has supreme antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that boost the immune system and aid a number of different ailments and issues that can come up in our everyday lives.
It’s amazing for combining with a carrier oil and massaging into sore muscles at the end of a day of intense activity, relieving nausea or for calming the tummy when faced with poor digestion or even food poisoning.
Ginger oil also works wonders when it comes to motion sickness. If you’re headed on a road trip and you’re prone to feeling a little queasy, drop a couple of drops of ginger oil into your water to relieve that nauseous feeling. It really is one of the best essential oils for travel.
For decades peppermint oil has been used to energise and relieve pesky stomach issues. When inhaled, studies have found that peppermint oil can relieve symptoms of IBS and indigestion.
Not only that, but the powerful scent alone can also really help to rejuvenate, wake up and energise, especially when suffering from jet lag or sleepless nights.
A small amount of evidence has also shown that peppermint oil, when applied topically can help with relieving those annoying travel tension headaches most of us suffer from at some point.
Lemon oil, just like lemons themselves, is packed full of Vitamin C and antioxidants, a perfect partner for the long term traveller.
Lemon oil is thought to boost energy levels, fight inflammation, relieve nausea, enhance skin quality and even disinfect surfaces- a great one to dilute in a spray bottle to disinfect aeroplane tray tables or Airbnb surfaces.

Note, however, that lemon oil is incredibly light-sensitive. If applied topically make sure to only do so at night and be sure to wash it off before exposing the skin to direct sunlight the next day.

Similar to ginger in the sense that it also has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties which can help to treat a number of tropical ailments such as bacterial infections, rashes and athletes’ foot.
Add a few drops into an organic, natural shampoo for the treatment of an itchy scalp, dandruff or psoriasis. A few small studies have also shown that oregano oil can also be used to treat candida and yeast infections.
