Home Workout Tips: 8 Ways to Have an Amazing Home Workout
It’s safe to say that most of us did not predict the standstill that faced us in 2020 and we certainly didn’t predict that we’d be working out from home for most of this year. With lockdowns across the world forcing gyms to close there’s only one obvious option left when it comes to exercise and that’s home workouts. While home workouts might not be the preferred choice for most people; most of us lack the same equipment we’d be able to find at the gym, it’s still better than nothing for keeping our bodies strong and healthy and our mental health in check. If you’re struggling with working out at home or if you’re looking for some tips to help with motivation here are my top 5 home workout tips for how you can have an amazing home workout without a gym in sight.

8 TOP HOME WORKOUT TIPS:
ESTABLISH A WORKOUT ROUTINE
One of the most essential home workout tips, that’d I’d personally recommend to anyone is to establish a routine that works for you. Block out the time in your agenda for the day but also make sure you know what you’re doing with that time. If you’re a seasoned exerciser, write yourself your own routine which you can stick to every day. If you’re a beginner then you may want to seek out advice from an online personal trainer or go for one of the many YouTube videos online. Whatever you choose to do, know what you’re doing, how long each workout will take, prepare your equipment (if needed) ahead of time and be confident about it. Preparation and having a routine is key, otherwise it’s easy to avoid it or think of excuses.
DO IT
It’s easy to get demotivated or discouraged or even distracted when working and working out at home. It may sound obvious but the best home workout tip I can give is to actually do it. In order to see results from our workouts we need consistency and to show up on our mat every day. Don’t skip a workout just because you don’t have an hour to spare every day. 20 minutes of focused activity is sometimes all you really need to get the benefits of a workout. Establish a good workout routine and stick to it. No excuses!

MUTE NOTIFICATIONS
For me personally, the biggest distraction in a workout is notifications, especially if you’re using your phone for your workout or to listen to music. Picture this, you’re having a great first 10 minutes working out when suddenly your phone pings. You check it and it’s your boss with so-and-so emergency. I’m guessing that’s game over for your workout right? What if you’d never seen that notification? You’d finish your workout and dealing with the emergency later. Notifications are a great way to ruin workouts so make sure you turn yours off, especially right before a workout.
CREATE OR DISCOVER THE PERFECT PLAYLIST
Music can make or break a workout. It can push you and inspire you to keep going and be better. Not only is listening to music while you workout fun, but it’s also sometimes essential for motivation. To really have an amazing home workout I highly recommend sitting down and making your own playlist with all your favourite songs for working out. If that seems like too much effort then check out the hundreds of playlists already on iTunes or Spotify and you’ll soon find a great one to fit your workout pace and music taste.
CHECK YOUR FORM
Just because you’re not at the gym doesn’t mean you should let you form go. As you’re working out be conscious of your form and if you can check it in a mirror before continuing an exercise. The last thing you want to do is hurt yourself in the long run. The Freeletics App, for example, features videos that show you correct form so if you’re stuck, search for a professional doing that exercise online to show you how it’s done.
CREATE A WORKOUT SPACE
In order to make the most of your workouts, you might want to set up a little home gym in one corner of the house. Even in a small apartment, have a small, designated workout corner where your equipment lives and where you train can give you motivation as this space will be synonymous with sweat and working out. It also helps to have all your equipment in one place and not having to waste time gathering up equipment before starting.

GIVE YOURSELF A GOAL
There’s nothing quite like having a goal to increase motivation. Whatever you want to lose or even gain a certain amount of weight, increase muscle mass, improve flexibility having this goal to work towards will make you accountable and therefore be more committed and motivated. Write your goal down and check in with it every so often. Make sure it’s measurable and maybe even involve a partner to again keep you committed and accountable for those fitness goals. There’s no reason that you can’t set and achieve goals just because you don’t have access to a gym.
INVEST IN BASIC EQUIPMENT
If you haven’t already, investing in the basic equipment will allow you to not only be comfortable but also to take your workouts to new levels. I’m not talking about going out and buying three gym machines and a whole set of kettlebells. What I might consider being ‘the basics’ are a great workout mat, some resistance bands and maybe a kettlebell or free-weight or two. Investing in just one kettlebell or free weight or even resistance bands can often triple the number of exercises available to you at home compared to just basic bodyweight exercises.
USE FITNESS APPS
When it comes to working out at home, technology really is your best friend. It can motivate you to get started and to continue and it gives us variety and guidance. If you’re unsure about working out at home and what to do, use fitness apps such as Freeletics, Nike Training Club and 8Fit which plan and guide you through workouts depending on your goals. You can also use videos by the many amazing trainers available on YouTube such as Pamela Reif and MadFit.
