Where is Èze?
Perched dramatically on a rocky hilltop 427 metres above the Mediterranean Sea, Èze is a medieval village located on the French Riviera, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeastern France.
It sits between two of the Riviera’s most glamorous destinations, Monaco, just 8 kilometres to the east, and Nice, around 12 kilometres to the west, making it one of the most perfectly positioned stops on the coast.
It’s worth keeping in mind that Èze is actually made up of two distinct parts. The first is the hilltop village, Èze Village, the medieval perched settlement that most people come to see, with its cobbled lanes, ancient stone walls, and breathtaking panoramic views.
The second is Èze-sur-Mer, the lower village sitting right on the coastline, where you’ll find a pebbly beach, a handful of restaurants and bars, and a train station with direct connections to Nice and Monaco — making it an easy and rewarding day trip from either city.

How to Get to Èze, France?
Getting to Èze is straightforward. The easiest and most scenic option is to take the train to Èze-sur-Mer station, which sits right on the lower coastal village and is served by regular direct trains from both Nice (around 15 minutes) and Monaco (around 10 minutes).
From Èze-sur-Mer, you have a few options for reaching the hilltop village. The first is the No. 83 bus, which winds its way up the steep hillside and drops you close to the entrance of Èze Village. The second, for the more adventurous, is the historic Nietzsche Path — a rugged uphill trail that takes around an hour to climb and rewards you with increasingly spectacular views over the coastline as you ascend.
You can also take an Uber from Eze station, or if you’re based nearby, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Villefranche, Nice, or Monaco, Uber would also work and save you time.
If you’re exploring the French Riviera by car as part of a wider road trip, you can drive directly up to the hilltop village and park in the small car park just outside the village entrance here. This is where I parked. However, know that it fills up quickly, so arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended — especially in the summer months when the village is at its busiest.
Before you book a Rental Car: I use Discover Cars to compare prices across multiple rental companies in one place. It’s my go-to platform for finding competitive rates in France and beyond. Opt for full coverage insurance; it’s a small upfront cost that can save you a major headache in busy cities. Find the best car rental deals.
Best Things to Do in Èze Village
Despite its small size, Èze Village packs a remarkable amount of charm into its ancient stone walls. You can comfortably explore everything it has to offer in half a day, making it the perfect day trip from Nice, Monaco, or anywhere else along the French Riviera.
Visit Jardin Exotique d’Èze

Sitting at the very top of the village, the Jardin Exotique d’Èze is an absolute must-visit and arguably the highlight of any trip to Èze. Built on the ruins of a medieval castle, this stunning exotic garden is filled with an extraordinary collection of cacti and succulents from around the world, their dramatic shapes and sculptural forms contrasting beautifully against the bright blue of the Mediterranean far below.
The garden winds its way up to the very summit, where you are rewarded with what can only be described as one of the most breathtaking panoramic views on the entire French Riviera — on a clear day, you can see all the way to Corsica.
There is a small entrance fee to visit (€10), but it is absolutely worth every cent. Time slots are allocated to each ticket, so I recommend booking online in advance for summer visits. Alternatively, go early (the garden opens at 9 am) to enjoy the garden in peace before the day-trippers arrive and purchase your ticket from the machines at the base of the village.
Walk Around the Town

One of the greatest pleasures of visiting Èze is simply wandering. The village is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways, hidden archways, and sun-drenched stone staircases that twist and turn their way up towards the summit, revealing charming little corners, cascading bougainvillea, and glimpses of the sparkling sea at almost every turn.
There are small artisan boutiques, galleries, and craft shops tucked into the ancient buildings along the way, making it a lovely place to browse at a leisurely pace. It feels, at times, like stepping back into medieval France — the kind of place you want to get a little lost in.
That said, it is worth noting that the narrow alleyways that make Èze so enchanting also mean it can feel incredibly crowded during the summer months. For the best experience, I’d recommend exploring the streets before 9 am — even before heading up to the Jardin Exotique — when the village is at its quietest, and you can soak up the atmosphere almost entirely to yourself.
Head to the Beach
After exploring the hilltop village, it’s well worth making your way down to Èze-sur-Mer to spend some time at the beach. It’s a pebbly stretch of coastline, as is typical of the French Riviera, but what it lacks in sand it more than makes up for in setting — crystal clear turquoise water lapping against the shore with the dramatic hillside of Èze towering behind you.
It’s a quieter and more relaxed alternative to the busy beaches of Nice or the glitz of Monaco, making it a lovely spot to unwind after a morning of exploring. There are a few beach bars and restaurants nearby where you can grab a cold drink or a long lunch and watch the world go by.
You can either take the No. 83 bus or an Uber back down to Èze-sur-Mer, or for those with energy to spare, descend via the Nietzsche Path (more on that below) on foot and arrive at the beach feeling like you’ve truly earned that dip in the Mediterranean.
Hike the Nietzsche Path
The Nietzsche Path — or Sentier Frédéric Nietzsche — is a historic trail that connects Èze-sur-Mer on the coastline to the hilltop village above, and it is said that the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche walked this very route regularly during his time in Èze in the 1880s, finding inspiration for the third part of his work ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’ among its steep rocky slopes.
The hike takes around an hour to climb and is not for the faint-hearted — it is steep, uneven underfoot in places, and exposed to the sun, so comfortable shoes and a bottle of water are essential.
However, the rewards are more than worth the effort. As you climb, the views over the Mediterranean and along the coastline open up dramatically with every step, and there is a real sense of achievement when you finally emerge into the village at the top.
You can also choose to take the bus up to the hilltop village first and then hike down the Nietzsche Path to the beach afterwards, which is a much gentler way to experience the trail, and a near-perfect way to structure your day in Èze.

Where to Stay in Eze
If you want to make the most of the magic of Èze beyond a day trip, spending a night or two here is a truly special experience. As you might expect, there aren’t many hotels in Èze, but what the village lacks in quantity, it definitely makes up for in quality. There are the best hotels in Èze.
Hôtel Château de La Chèvre d’Or – For the ultimate Èze hotel, look no further than the legendary Château de La Chèvre d’Or. This five-star clifftop hotel is built into the medieval village itself, offering jaw-dropping views over the Mediterranean, Michelin-starred dining, and an infinity pool that feels like it hangs over the sea — one of the most iconic hotel experiences on the entire French Riviera.
Château Eza – Another stunning five-star option, Château Eza is a collection of medieval village houses that have been transformed into a boutique luxury hotel, with just a handful of beautifully appointed rooms and suites. The terrace restaurant here is reason enough to visit, even if you’re not staying — the views over the coastline are absolutely spectacular and it is a wonderful spot for a long, indulgent lunch or a romantic dinner as the sun sets over the Mediterranean.

A day trip to Èze from the French Riviera
While Èze is small enough to explore in half a day, how you structure your visit can make a big difference to the experience. There are two approaches I would recommend, depending on your wider French Riviera itinerary.
The first is to arrive early — ideally by 8 am or even before. Start by wandering the cobbled alleyways of the village while they are still blissfully quiet, soaking up the atmosphere before the day-trippers descend. Head to the Jardin Exotique for opening at 9 am, then, as the morning wears on and the crowds begin to filter in, browse the boutiques, galleries, and craft shops at a leisurely pace.
From there, make your way down the Nietzsche Path on foot to Èze-sur-Mer and reward yourself with a swim in the Mediterranean before a relaxed lunch at one of the beach bars.
The second option is to arrive later in the day, around 5 pm is ideal, but check the opening hours of the Jardin Exotique as they vary depending on the time of year. Head straight up to the Jardin Exotique to catch it in the softer afternoon light, then wander the village streets as the day-trippers begin to leave and the place reclaims its tranquillity.
As the sun starts to dip, settle in for an aperitivo on the terrace at Château Eza and watch the sky turn gold over the Mediterranean, one of the most memorable sundowners on the Riviera. From there, you can linger for dinner on the terrace itself, or make your way to the legendary Restaurant La Chèvre d’Or for a truly special evening.

Where to Eat in Èze
From Michelin-starred terraces to casual beachside lunches, the best restaurants in Èze, offer something for every appetite and occasion. Here is a look at some of the top spots to eat and drink during your visit.
Restaurant La Chèvre d’Or – One of the most celebrated dining experiences on the French Riviera, Restaurant La Chèvre d’Or holds two Michelin stars and delivers an extraordinary combination of world-class cuisine and utterly breathtaking views over the Mediterranean. It is a splurge, but for a special occasion, it is hard to imagine a more spectacular setting.
Château Eza – The one Michelin star terrace restaurant at Château Eza is one of those rare places that is as memorable for its setting as it is for the food on the plate. Perched high above the coastline with sweeping panoramic views, it serves refined French Riviera cuisine in an atmosphere that feels effortlessly romantic — perfect for a long lunch or a sunset dinner.
Le Nid d’Aigle – a charming and more relaxed option tucked into the village, serving simple, honest French and Provençal dishes at friendlier prices than its five-star neighbours. A great spot for a leisurely lunch in the midst of a morning of exploring.
Le Cactus – Casual, unpretentious, and great value by Èze standards, Le Cactus is a handy option for a simple lunch or a cold drink in the heart of the village. Nothing fancy, but a solid choice if you want to take a break from the heat.
Lounge Bar at Château Eza – If a full dinner at Château Eza is beyond the budget, the Lounge Bar is a wonderful and slightly more accessible way to experience this iconic property. Pull up a seat, order an Aperol Spritz or a glass of local rosé, and watch the sun sink slowly into the Mediterranean — it really doesn’t get much better than this.
L’Atelier Gourmet – Perfect spot for grabbing breakfast, coffee, and cake or a quick sandwich after visiting the village.
Petit Loup Specialty Coffee – Ideal for a mid-morning pick-me-up.

Is Èze Village Worth Visiting?
Without a doubt, yes. Èze is one of those rare places that genuinely lives up to the hype — and in a region as well-travelled as the French Riviera, that is no small feat. It is undeniably touristy, and if you visit in the height of summer without heeding the advice to arrive early or late, it can feel overwhelmingly crowded in its narrow alleyways.
But catch it at the right time of day, and Èze is nothing short of magical. The combination of medieval architecture, exotic gardens, vertiginous clifftop views, and that impossibly blue stretch of Mediterranean below is unlike anywhere else on the Riviera.
Even if you have just a few hours to spare, a visit to Èze is one of the most rewarding things you can do along this stretch of coastline, and one of those travel experiences that tends to stay with you long after you’ve left.
