How to Decide on Where to Stay in Mallorca, Spain
If it’s your first time in Mallorca it’s a good idea to think about a couple of things before booking any accommodation. Before deciding on where to stay in Mallorca Spain you’ll need to clarify the type of trip you’re doing and how long you’re staying on the island.
It’s also a good idea to ask yourself if you want to have just one base for your whole trip or whether you’re up to moving around.
This is what we recommend for different types of trips to Mallorca:
A weekend break in Palma: one hotel in Palma located centrally.
4-5 days island road trip: one hotel in Palma and another in the north or south of the island.
7-10 days ultimate Mallorca road trip: one hotel in the north, one in the south, and another in Palma
A beach vacation: one or two hotels in the south of Mallorca, depending on how much you want to move around
Active mountain vacation: one or two hotels in the north of the island, again, depending on how much you want to move around.
Mallorca is a big island and to see most of it well you’ll need a minimum of 7 days in Mallorca. 10 days is even better. A trip like this does involve a few different accommodations in different parts of the island.
Top Tips:
Mallorca is just too big to stay in Palma for one week and do day trips to all parts of the island every day and I don’t recommend this as you’ll be in the car A LOT! When deciding where to stay in Mallorca Spain, it’s generally best to stay locally.
If you’re accommodation orientated, this way you’ll also get to experience many different properties on Mallorca, and trust, me there is an amazing selection.
If you’re planning to make your way around the whole island for a week, I’d recommend a night or two in Palma, perhaps before and after your flight, two nights in the Tramuntana mountains, and three nights in the south to make the most of the beaches.
This includes three different accommodations but it will save you a lot of driving time.
Choosing your Stay Through Epic Properties
If you’re someone who loves epic properties and you often choose where to stay based on stunning, focused destination properties then this might dictate where you stay in Mallorca.
Luckily there are some beautiful destination properties in Mallorca dispersed around the island making this a convenient way to see Majorca.
Some of the best luxury destination properties in Mallorca, to bookmark right now, are:
Es Raco d’Arta – a stunning wellness retreat escape in Arta.
Can Ferrereta – design doesn’t get better than this. Located in Santanyí
Belmond La Residencia – a classic, luxury Belmond property in Deia
Can Cera – stunning boutique property in Palma
Finca Serena– a luxury, boutique farm stay near Sineu
Hotel Corazon – Mallorca’s brand new, artsy hotspot
Stay a couple of nights in some or all these properties and you’ll already have the opportunity to be based in and explore all the different parts of the island.

Palma de Mallorca
Palma is Mallorca’s beautiful and sunshine-filled capital. The city is full of exciting restaurants, beautiful design stores as well as history, culture, and many different attractions and landmarks.
Sightseeing in Palma starts with a visit to Palma Cathedral or La Seu as it’s known locally. The cathedral is one of Palma’s most iconic and beautiful buildings. It’s famous today mainly for the fact that the inside was adapted by the famous Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi.
Next, a visit to the Arab Baths is a must along with the Royal Palace of Almundaina, the royal residence of the Spanish royal family in Mallorca.
Make sure to also not miss just walking and exploring the small streets and alleyways of Mallorca’s Old Town as well as going shopping in the city’s best design stores. Bellver Castle which sits just outside the city on a hill is another must-visit.
Palma makes a lovely weekend city break too. The city is compact and easy to get around and generally is the perfect size for a weekend trip. If you’re thinking of just heading to Palma for a weekend escape then I highly recommend you do it.
Most visitors spend a day or two in Palma, generally right after coming in or right before a return flight.

Where to Stay in Mallorca, Spain: The South & South East
Mallorca’s south and southeast boast some of the best beaches on the island. If you’re coming to Mallorca to take advantage of the beautiful white sandy beaches and hidden coves, you’ll definitely want to choose a hotel base somewhere in the southeast for a few nights.
There are many different little towns and accommodation options in this part of Mallorca. From little towns right on the coast like Cala Figuera and Portocolom to some hidden gems a little further inland. These are the best areas to stay in the south when visiting the best beaches in Mallorca.
Cala Figuera
Cala Figuera is a small fishing village located right on the southeast coast of Mallorca. It’s one of the best places to stay in the area for a few different reasons.
Firstly, Cala Figuera is just a beautiful place in itself. It’s small and walkable. The scenery is just lovely- imagine a small cove with villas built onto the rocks, a lovely walkway or promenade by the water, and small boats bobbing up and down in the water. It’s a lovely place to relax so you needn’t go far if you’re based here.
Secondly, Cala Figuera is located very close to some of the best beaches in Mallorca. Nearby you’ll find Cala s’Almunia and Calo des Moro as well as Cala Llombards. They are all just a short drive away so you needn’t make a huge effort to visit these beaches.
When thinking about where to stay in Mallorca, Spain, Cala Figuera really is one of the best options, especially for those that want to prioritize beautiful beaches on their Mallorca itinerary.

Colònia de Sant Jordi is another lovely option when considering where to stay in Mallorca, Spain. It isn’t as crowded or as popular as some of the other beach towns in Mallorca, even though you’ll find plenty of lovely restaurants, accommodation options, and picturesque beaches all within walking distance.
Staying in this coastal town will allow for easy access to some of the best beaches in Mallorca. Not only are the beaches in town lovely themselves, but you’re also just a short distance from Es Trenc– one of the largest and most beautiful sandy beaches in Mallorca.
Southwards you’re also close to Playa es Carbo and Playa Ses Roquetes, two nearby yet not-too-popular beaches you can also take advantage of. Colònia de Sant Jordi is also the nearest best place to stay for Cala Pi, another very popular tourist destination in Mallorca.

Cala D’ Or
Further north along the southeastern coast of Mallorca is the lovely seaside town of Cala D’Or. Cala D’Or is a bit of a resort town with many lovely hotels, beach resorts, and rentals available. There are also many lovely restaurants and cafes to make the most of both during the day and in the evenings.
Using Cala D’Or as your base in the southeast gives you easy access to all the amazing beaches on this side of Mallorca and easy access to restaurants for dinner in the evening. You’ll also have shops, cafes, and tour services within walking distance of your accommodation.
For those that want to be within walking distance of many lovely coves, Cala D’Or is also a great option. Cala Esmerelda, Cala Serena, and Cala Ferrara, among others, are all within a short walk of the town. For this reason, it’s a great option for those that want a beach base but don’t want to rent a car.
There are many things to do in Cala D’Or too that include, dining and relaxing, going for a walk around the Cala D’Or marina, and checking out Es Fortí, an abandoned, historical fort with gorgeous sea views. Of course, you can spend many days exploring the nearby coves and beaches too.

Melia Cala d’Or Boutique Hotel – For a luxury experience, this is the top choice right in Cala D’Or. Large, grand rooms with both traditional and modern furnishings, great dining options, and very family-friendly. Check rates and availability here.
Inturotel Cala Esmeralda Beach Hotel & Spa – A wonderful adults-only choice in Cala Esmerelda this stunning hotel has incredible ocean views, modern, clean decor, and a superb spa. Our top pick in Cala D’or. Check it out here.
Portocolom
Portocolom is a lovely, relaxed town on the eastern coast of Mallorca. I personally love the pace of life here; locals relaxing in the sunshine with morning conversations over coffee is what you might see here.
Protected by Tancat de Sa Torre, a peninsula that juts out into the sea, Portocolom is a calm spot with some really lovely beaches and calm, shallow waters. This makes it a great spot for water sports like SUP and jet-skiing, both of which can easily be rented in the marina.
Make sure to visit Platja de Cala Marçal, a lovely local beach, and well as explore the more off-the-beaten-path peninsula and its wild beaches.
Portocolom has everything you might need for a fantastic stay including good accommodation options, supermarkets and shops, and plenty of restaurants serving delicious, local food.
Where to Stay in Portocolom:
Barefoot Hotel Mallorca – Wonderful modern decor and a very boho vibe at this lovely, beachside hotel with all the amenities you’ll need for a fantastic stay. Make sure to opt for the sea view balcony room for the best views. Read more here…

The North East
If you’re visiting Mallorca in the summer high season and want to do what you can to escape the crowds, heading to Mallorca’s more underrated northeast is your best bet.
The northeast of Mallorca is full of atmospheric, traditional towns and villages, lovely coves and beaches as well as a lighthouse. There are many great accommodation options too in this part of Mallorca ranging from incredible wellness retreats to farm stays and golf resorts.
Cala Ratjada
Cala Ratjada is a great option for those who want to get away from the crowds and stay at the coast. The small town has everything you need for an enjoyable stay from lovely beaches to supermarkets.
Staying here, however, it’s best to have a car to be able to explore all the surrounding beaches.
Where to Stay in Cala Ratjada
Lago Garden Apart-Suites & Spa Hotel – Located right on the beach, this lovely 5-star hotel feels airy, grand, and luxurious. We love the large outdoor spaces, pool, and spa with hydrotherapy circuits. Check rates and availability here.
Grupotel Aguait Resort & Spa– A highly rated, ocean-side, adults-only hotel with an outdoor pool, ocean views, and large, bright modern rooms. Check rates and availability here.
Artà
Artà might be one of the most beautiful yet overlooked places in all of Mallorca. Located inland on the northeastern peninsula, this stunning little village is full of rustic, stone cottages, colorful-shuttered houses, and a lovely local church.
It’s far from the tourism of some more popular towns like Valldemossa and instead, you’ll see mostly locals here going about their day.
There’s not much to do in Artà but go for a wander through town, discover some authentic restaurants, have some long lunches and thoroughly enjoy your accommodation because honestly, Artà has some of the best boutique hotels and luxury spots around.
Where to Stay in Artà:
Es Raco d’Artà– the best wellness retreat spot is located in Artà. Es Raco is a truly dream-like stay with swoon-worthy decor and a calming environment. It’s a space that fully embodies slow travel and encourages you to connect with Mallorca and yourself. Don’t miss a stay here! Find out more here.
Ōrigins Hotel Boutique – A stunning boutique hotel in Artà. Lovely traditional stone architecture, modern, natural decor, a brilliant breakfast, and a roof terrace with gorgeous views of the town. Adults-only. Check rates and availability here.
The Center: Sineu
For those that want to experience Mallorca’s countryside, staying in the center of the island is a real experience. Amid the gently rolling slopes, you’ll find fields of olive trees, farm stays, and gorgeous, traditional towns.
Sineu is one of those gorgeous inland towns. Imagine narrow, cobbled streets with stone buildings on either side, light blue shutters on the windows, stone church spires at the end of each street and small squares filled with locals chatting away.
Sineu also comes to life on Wednesdays with the local farmer’s market. At this time you’ll be able to pick up everything you’d like from local fruit to souvenirs and even some farm animals. One of my favorite parts of the market is the local fruit and vegetable stands where you can pick up the perfect picnic spread before heading to the beach.
Where to Stay in Sineu
The Pastel Blue – A stunning cottage rental for two in the middle of the country. Retreat in a rustic simple house and enjoy mornings in the pool and gardens. Check availability here.
Can Font – A charming guesthouse bringing back vibes from old Mallorca. Check availability here.
Where to Stay in Mallorca, Spain: The Northern Mountains
For those wanting to explore all parts of Mallorca, dividing your time between the beaches in the southeast and the Tramuntana mountains of the north is a great idea. The mountains provide a quiet and peaceful landscape for the ultimate escape.
Staying in any one of the lovely mountain towns and villages like Soller, Valldemossa, Deia or even Fornalutx will mean you can use your accommodation as a base for a few days to explore all the alluring towns and beaches on this side of Mallorca.
Here are some of the best places to base yourself in the northern parts of Mallorca, Spain.

Pollença
Pollença is a wonderful town, located in Mallorca’s northwest corner. It’s characterized by its lovely narrow streets, restaurants, stores, and notable landmarks. It’s full of history and tradition. The town is small and you don’t need much time to see it all but it does make a great base for exploring this side of the island.
There are many things to do around Pollença, all within a short drive. You’ll want to take the thrilling drive up to Cap de Formentor as well as visit the bustling port town of Port de Pollença. Staying at Puerto Pollensa is also a great option too.

Soller & Port de Soller
Located in a valley and surrounded by beautiful green mountains on either side is the picture-perfect town of Sóller. Sóller is the largest town in this mountain area of Mallorca and basing yourself here will mean you’ll have access to the best things to do that Sóller and Port de Soller offer.
There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes, and local stores to explore in your free evenings too.
Depending on the time of year that you visit, Sóller can get quite busy- during all times of the day so make sure you book your accommodation well in advance.
Where to Stay in Soller
Meem Townhouse– A beautifully restored, traditional townhouse providing a refuge of just 7 suites in the center of Sóller. We love the minimal decor. It’s the perfect place to rest and fully disconnect. Check rates and availability here.
Ecocirer Healthy Stay– Located just outside Sóller this lovely, boutique stay prioritizes health and rest in every way. Make sure not to miss the superb plant-based breakfast. Check rates and availability here.
Deia
Not too far from Soller, you’ll find another gorgeous ochre, stone town in Mallorca, Deia. Its color beautifully contrasts with the green hills around it as its main road weaves through its center like a snake.
Deia is so aesthetic and picturesque that quite honestly, it’s difficult to leave this little town so why not stay? It would make a fantastic base for a couple of nights as you relax, drive around and explore the other towns and beaches in close proximity.
Deia also has a few things to offer itself. There are some fantastic restaurants and cafes here as well as the Robert Graves Museum where you can find out more about the life and works of the English novelist and poet who spent a large part of his life in Deia.
There are also quite a few hikes and walks in the area and you can head down to Cala Deia too for a refreshing dip in the afternoon.
Where to Stay in Deia:

Hotel Corazon – A brand new opening in the Tramuntana foothills between Soller and Deia. This is the place to stay to be immersed in Mallorca’s creative and artistic side. Check rates and book here.
Valldemossa
Valldemossa is probably one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca and a visit here is an absolute must during your trip to Mallorca. You can also use Valldemossa as a base for a few nights to explore the surrounding area.
Valldemossa has many great restaurants, cafes, and enough lovely local stores for everything you might need throughout your stay.
There are quite a few things to do in Valldemossa such as visiting the Carthusian Monastery, where Polish composer Frederic Chopin and George Sand spent a season, along with the Biblioteca de Valldemossa and the Jardins Rei Joan Carles.
Most people visit Valldemossa as part of a day tour so it’s well worth staying around here so you can make the most of fewer crowds later in the evening and early morning. This is a worthwhile strategy when considering where to stay in Mallorca, Spain.
Where to Stay in Valldemossa
Mirabó de Valldemossa – A stunning country cottage located high up in the hills above Mallorca with a stunning view of the town. Beautiful traditional rooms, gorgeous pool area. Check rates and availability here.
Agroturismo Son Viscos– a gorgeous, traditional farm stay just outside Valldemossa with beautiful bright rooms, views, and gardens. Check rates and info here.
The West
The west coast of Mallorca is generally known to be the more resort-style with party towns like Magaluf nearby. However, there are some good spots when thinking about where to stay in Mallorca, Spain, on the western shores.
This is especially so if you’re traveling as a family or large group. Staying on this side of Mallorca is also ideal if you plan to visit the island’s water parks.
I personally wouldn’t stay on this side of the island. Between staying in Palma, around Soller, and then around Santanyi, you’ll be able to cover the entire island during your Mallorca itinerary. Also, personally, I think there are better accommodation options in other areas of Mallorca.
Sant Elm
Sant Elm is a small little village and Mallorca’s most westernmost town. The town has a lovely beach where you can spend your days relaxing. There are also a few restaurants and cafes here but in general, the atmosphere is very chilled.
From Sant Elm, you can take a day trip to Parque Natural de Sa Dragonera as well as explore the coastline and begin a drive along the MA-10 and through the mountains. There are also options for boat trips around more dramatic parts of the coastline in Mallorca.
Where to Stay in Sant Elm
Universal Aparthotel Don Camilo– a great option in Sant Elm. Light bright and modern with a large outdoor swimming pool, restaurant, bar, and beachfront access. The apartments here are a great option for those wanting to self-cater a little during their stay. Check rates and availability.
Andratx
The small mountain town of Andratx also offers a lovely place to stay for exploring the western side of Mallorca. Andratx is a charming, old town with an atmospheric main square and an old church.
There isn’t too much tourism here meaning that you’ll be getting a fully local experience.
Activities themselves are somewhat lacking in Andratx but you’re just a short drive away from Port d’Andratx and its lovely bays and cliffs as well as the MA-10 mountain road which you can drive to Estellencs and further to Deia.
There are definitely enough beautiful spots and things to do to keep you busy when in the area.
Where to stay in Andratx
Unic- Turisme d’Interior– a small, yet lovely restored townhouse in the center of town. Modern furnishings, clean and comfortable. Check rates and availability here.
