If you’re wondering where to stay in Sifnos, the good news is that there are very few wrong answers. One of the quieter and more refined islands in the Cyclades, Sifnos is small enough to explore easily yet diverse enough that your choice of base can significantly shape your trip.

Stay in one of the hilltop towns, and you’ll have the island’s best restaurants and bars on your doorstep. Choose a beachside village and your days will revolve around morning swims and long seaside lunches.

Unlike larger Greek islands, Sifnos doesn’t have hundreds of hotels spread across dozens of resorts. Instead, you’ll find a carefully curated collection of boutique hotels, design-led villas, and charming rentals scattered across a handful of villages and beaches. That’s part of the island’s appeal, but it also means the best places to stay in Sifnos book up quickly.

Having explored Sifnos extensively, I’ve found that choosing where to stay comes down to one simple question: do you want to be in a village or by the sea? In this guide, I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Sifnos, who they’re best suited for, and my favorite hotels and villas in each.

How I chose where to stay: I’m a hotel girlie through and through, so where I stay often shapes my entire trip. More often than not, I choose my destination hotel first and build everything else around it. Fortunately, Sifnos gives you enough variety to do exactly that. The best hotels in Sifnos are spread across several different corners of the island, from beachfront retreats in Faros to hillside hideaways overlooking the Aegean.

Before booking, it’s worth deciding whether you’d rather stay in or near one of the island’s villages, where you’ll have tavernas, shops, and evening strolls on your doorstep, or directly by the beach. Personally, I’d only recommend a beach-based stay if you’re planning to rent a car or ATV, as some of the island’s most beautiful beaches sit a little removed from the main villages. With your own wheels, however, staying by the sea can be the perfect Sifnos experience.

Make sure to also check access for village accommodation if you have a lot of luggage, as sometimes this means carrying it up hundreds of stairs. Sifnos villages are hilly and sometimes steep.

The Best Hotels in Sifnos

Sifnos may be small, but its hotel scene is surprisingly refined. The island’s best stays lean toward intimate boutique properties, many family-run and thoughtfully designed, with whitewashed Cycladic architecture, sea views, and a strong sense of place.

There aren’t dozens of standout luxury hotels here, which is part of Sifnos’ appeal. The flip side is that the best rooms book up quickly, especially from June through September, so it’s worth planning well ahead.

Here are the best hotels in Sifnos to have on your radar when planning a trip.

Stamna Sifnos – A beautiful stone-built retreat tucked into the hills above Apollonia. The design balances traditional Cycladic architecture with understated luxury, while the peaceful setting, thoughtful service, and sweeping countryside views make it one of the island’s most distinctive boutique stays. Verina Astra – Perched above the sea near Artemonas, Verina Astra is one of Sifnos’ most coveted hotels. Expect minimalist suites, panoramic Aegean views, and a tranquil infinity pool that feels suspended between sky and sea.

Nos Hotel & Villas – Located on the waterfront in Faros, Nos brings a contemporary luxury edge to Sifnos. Stylish rooms, a polished beach-club atmosphere, excellent dining, and direct access to the water make it a favorite for travelers seeking a more upscale resort experience.

Verina Terra – Set just steps from Platis Gialos Beach, Verina Terra offers a relaxed, barefoot-luxury atmosphere surrounded by gardens and olive trees. Spacious suites, warm hospitality, and an excellent breakfast make it particularly popular with couples and families.

Apsila Pool Suites – One of the island’s newer boutique openings, Apsila Pool Suites combines sleek Cycladic design with private pools and expansive sea views. Its hillside location over Kamares provides a peaceful escape while remaining within easy reach of Sifnos’ villages, port and beaches.

Designed for couples but spacious enough for small families thanks to an additional sofa bed, it combines traditional Cycladic style with a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere. Access to a shared swimming pool, while the private terrace is ideal for evening aperitivos after a day at the beach.

Best Areas to Stay in Sifnos

When deciding where to stay in Sifnos, the biggest choice is whether you want to base yourself by the beach or in one of the island’s villages. Beach areas offer easy access to swimming, waterfront tavernas, and a laid-back holiday atmosphere, while the towns provide more dining options, local life, and a traditional Cycladic setting.

There isn’t a right or wrong answer, but each area delivers a very different experience. Given Sifnos’ small size, it’s easy to explore the island from either, especially with a rental car.

Apollonia & Artemonas

Although technically two separate villages, Apollonia and Artemonas flow so seamlessly into one another that most visitors experience them as a single destination.

Apollonia is the lively heart of Sifnos, packed with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and narrow whitewashed lanes, while neighboring Artemonas feels quieter and more residential, with elegant mansions, flower-filled courtyards, and a slower pace.

Staying in either puts you close to some of the island’s best dining and nightlife, making this area ideal if you want to be within walking distance of everything, particularly in the evening.

Keep in mind, however, that most of the streets or alleyways in Apollonia and Artemonas are for pedestrian traffic only, and the towns are very hilly. It’s wise to check access to accommodation here, particularly small rentals, especially if you have a lot of luggage. For this reason, I recommend the accommodations below, where you can easily drive in.

If you’re not planning on renting a car, I’d suggest staying in Apollonia, where you can walk to plenty of restaurants and bars and use the bus service to get around the island.

Kastro

Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the Aegean, Kastro is Sifnos’ most beautiful and atmospheric village. The island’s former capital is a maze of whitewashed alleyways, blue-domed churches, and centuries-old stone buildings, with sea views appearing around almost every corner.

Staying here puts you steps from some of Sifnos’ most iconic sights, including the postcard-perfect Church of the Seven Martyrs, while sunset drinks at Loggia Wine Bar and dinner reservations at Cantina are just a short stroll away.

Accommodation options are limited compared to other parts of the island, and there are no hotels, but you’ll find a handful of excellent rental properties tucked within the village’s historic streets.

Kamares

Kamares is Sifnos’ main port town and the first place most visitors see when arriving on the island. If you’re only visiting for a few days or have an early ferry departure, it’s a convenient base that removes the need for extra transfers.

There’s a long sandy beach right in town, along with a good selection of tavernas, cafés, and waterfront bars that create a pleasant holiday atmosphere. Personally, I didn’t spend much time here beyond arriving and departing, as I preferred the character and dining scene of the island’s villages, but it’s a practical and comfortable option for a short stay.

Faros

Moving onto the beaches in Sifnos, Faros is one of the island’s most appealing places to stay. This small seaside village wraps around a sheltered bay with crystal-clear water, a handful of excellent tavernas, top restaurants like Pelicanos, and a relaxed atmosphere that perfectly captures the slower pace of island life.

It’s home to one of Sifnos’ standout hotels, Nos Hotel & Villas, and offers easy access to several nearby beaches and coastal walking trails. If your idea of a Greek island escape involves morning swims and long seafood lunches by the water, Faros is hard to beat.

Vathi

Vathi is one of the most picturesque beach settings on Sifnos, a wide, sheltered bay framed by golden sand, calm turquoise water, and low hills. The beach is spacious and family-friendly, with shallow waters that make it particularly appealing for those traveling with children.

You’ll also find two of the area’s standout tavernas right on the waterfront, making long lunches and easy dinners part of daily life. While hotel options are limited, there are several excellent rental properties here, and for families looking for a relaxed beach holiday, Vathi is one of the island’s best choices. I recommend having a rental car if staying here.

Platis Gialos

Platis Gialos is Sifnos’ most popular beach destination and strikes a nice balance between convenience and laid-back island living. The long sandy beach is one of the best on the island, backed by tavernas, cafés, beach bars, and a handful of shops, creating more of a village atmosphere than you’ll find in some of Sifnos’ smaller beach settlements.

It’s also home to one of the island’s best hotels, Verina Terra, making it an excellent choice if you want a beachfront stay without feeling isolated. For first-time visitors, Platis Gialos is one of the easiest and most versatile places to base yourself. There are also some exceptional luxury villas near this beach for those who prefer a little more space.

Cherronisos

Tucked away at the northern tip of Sifnos, Cherronisos is the choice for travelers seeking seclusion, peace, and a genuine escape from the busier corners of the island.

Centered around what is arguably Sifnos’ most beautiful little cove, the tiny fishing village feels wonderfully removed from everything, with calm waters, a handful of waterfront tavernas, and little else to distract you.

If your ideal Sifnos trip revolves around swimming, reading, long lunches, and slowing down completely, this is one of the most rewarding places to stay on the island. I’d suggest that a car here is a non-negotiable.
