Checking In: Stamna, Sifnos
Stamna Sifnos is the island’s newest luxury boutique hotel. Discover why it quickly became one of our favourite stays in the Cyclades.
There’s a reason so many people return to Sifnos year after year. The island has a softness to it that’s increasingly difficult to find elsewhere in the Cyclades. Life unfolds slowly here. Long lunches stretch into sunset swims, dinners drift well past midnight, and even in high summer, the island somehow manages to hold onto its sense of calm.
Stamna Sifnos captures that mood perfectly.
Opened in 2025 by twin brothers Nikos and Costas Antimissaris, the 20-room hotel sits quietly in the hills above Apollonia, blending contemporary design with the textures, traditions and rhythms of the island itself. But what stayed with me most after checking out wasn’t the architecture or even the views. It was the atmosphere.
Everything here feels easy. The staff are genuinely warm, the pace is unhurried, and Pilos, the hotel’s restaurant, delivered some of the best food we ate anywhere on Sifnos. By the second day, mornings had slowed into lingering breakfasts, afternoons disappeared by the pool, and dinner regularly turned into long candlelit evenings over wine.
In a region increasingly crowded with hotels trying very hard to impress, Stamna Sifnos succeeds by doing the opposite.

What to Know Before You Go
Stamna is not a loud, scene-driven Cycladic resort. The hotel leans fully into quiet luxury and slow island living, with an emphasis on calm, thoughtful design and genuinely warm hospitality.
The property opened in 2025 and is currently in only its second season, so everything still feels incredibly fresh and intentional. There are just 20 rooms and suites, giving the hotel a far more intimate atmosphere than many luxury stays in the Cyclades.
The hotel operates seasonally from May through late October, with June and September being particularly ideal for visiting Sifnos.
If you plan on dining at Pilos throughout your stay, book ahead. It quickly became one of our favourite restaurants on the island.
Location
Stamna Sifnos sits quietly in the hills just outside Apollonia, overlooking terraced countryside and the Aegean beyond.
The setting feels wonderfully removed without ever becoming inconvenient. Apollonia’s restaurants and winding whitewashed lanes are only a three-minute drive away, while beaches such as Platis Gialos and the port at Kamares are reached easily within 15 to 20 minutes.
What stayed with me most, though, was the stillness.
Mornings began with a picture-perfect sunrise over the Aegean with little more than the sound of wind moving through olive trees and distant church bells somewhere across the hillside. Even at the height of summer, the hotel retains an extraordinary sense of calm.
Sunset here is particularly beautiful. The light turns almost honey-coloured across the stone terraces and surrounding hills, and suddenly nobody seems interested in leaving for dinner.
When to Book
June and September are ideal if you want to experience Sifnos at its most balanced. The sea is warm (especially in September), the island feels lively but never chaotic, and evenings remain pleasantly breezy.
July and August naturally bring more movement across the Cyclades, though Stamna somehow maintains its peaceful atmosphere regardless. The property’s layout helps enormously. Terraced levels, generous outdoor space, and only 20 rooms mean the hotel never feels crowded.
If dining is important to you, it’s worth planning ahead. Pilos has quickly established itself as one of the island’s standout tables, and after dining there, I understood exactly why.
Essentially, book your stay at Stamna as soon as you can, suites here fill up fast, given this is one of the best luxury boutique hotels on the island.
At the Hotel
There’s something refreshingly unforced about the experience at Stamna.
Arrival feels warm and personal. Staff are gracious without slipping into formality, and the service throughout our stay carried that same effortless tone. Conversations felt natural. Recommendations felt genuine. Nothing about the hospitality appeared scripted.
Days unfold slowly here, almost without structure. Breakfast stretches comfortably into late morning. Afternoons drift between the pool, nearby villages and shaded terraces. The hotel also offers yoga, Pilates, massage treatments and curated island experiences, though there’s never any pressure to fill your schedule.
That freedom became one of my favourite parts of staying here.
Some luxury hotels insist on constantly reminding you of their amenities. Stamna simply allows you to enjoy the island at your own pace.

Stamna Sifnos Hotel Review
The Hotel & Its History
The story behind Stamna gives the property much of its character.
The Antimissaris brothers first encountered Sifnos during a summer trip through the Greek islands more than a decade ago. What began as fascination gradually evolved into a long-term project shaped by patience and genuine affection for the island.
Importantly, they approached the process with restraint. Rather than arriving with the attitude of outside developers imposing a vision, they spent years building relationships locally and understanding the rhythms of island life.
That respect is visible throughout the property.
Even the name carries local significance. “Stamna” refers to a traditional clay vessel, while “Pilos,” the hotel’s restaurant, takes its name from clay itself, both nodding to Sifnos’ deep-rooted pottery traditions.
One of the loveliest details is that many of the ceramics throughout the hotel were crafted by one of the island’s oldest pottery workshops. The pieces don’t feel decorative for decoration’s sake. They feel connected to place.

Design
Visually, Stamna Sifnos is exceptionally cohesive.
The architecture draws heavily from traditional Cycladic forms while softening them through a more contemporary lens. Stone walls, pale wood, textured plaster and handmade ceramics create interiors that feel warm rather than minimal for minimalism’s sake.
Nothing competes for attention. Rooms breathe naturally. Materials are allowed to speak quietly for themselves. Even the palette mirrors the surrounding landscape, shifting between sandy neutrals, warm clay tones and muted olive greens.
The landscaping deserves equal praise. Olive trees, terraced gardens and native planting soften the property beautifully, making it feel embedded within the hillside rather than imposed onto it.
At sunset, the entire hotel seems to dissolve into the landscape.
Rooms & Suites

Stamna’s 20 rooms and suites all follow the same understated design language.
Expect soft earth tones, linen textures, sculptural ceramics and generous natural light throughout. Nearly every category includes expansive outdoor space, whether that’s a Mediterranean garden, terrace or private pool overlooking the sea.
What I appreciated most was how restorative the rooms felt.
There’s an intentional quietness to the interiors. Nothing feels excessive or distracting. After long days exploring the island, returning to the room felt immediately calming.
Sleep also comes remarkably easily here. Between the complete silence, soft materials and hillside setting, it’s the sort of place where afternoon naps happen accidentally.
Dining
Pilos was easily one of the highlights of our stay.
In fact, it became one of our favourite meals anywhere on Sifnos, and the breakfast alone would justify booking the hotel.
The cooking centres around seasonal Cycladic produce, local seafood and beautifully sourced ingredients prepared with restraint and confidence.
Nothing on the menu feels overworked. Dishes arrive vibrant, balanced and deeply rooted in the island without becoming overly rustic or predictable.
Breakfast, especially, deserves mention. There’s a beautifully curated buffet spread for everything cold, including local cheeses, fruit, yoghurt, pastries and traditional Sifnian dishes, while eggs and more elaborate plates are ordered à la carte and prepared fresh.
It strikes exactly the right balance between abundance and ease, encouraging you to linger over the morning rather than rush through it.
Dinner at Pilos feels equally atmospheric. Lantern light reflects softly across the pool, tables fill gradually throughout the evening, and the entire space settles into this wonderfully relaxed rhythm.
What makes it even more impressive is that Sifnos has one of the strongest dining scenes in the Cyclades, with genuinely exceptional restaurants across the island, making it far from easy to stand out here. Yet Pilos manages exactly that, through consistently beautiful cooking, thoughtful sourcing and an atmosphere you want to return to night after night.

Anything Else Worth Mentioning?
The staff genuinely elevate the experience.
Warmth in hospitality can sometimes feel performative at luxury properties. Here, it never did. Everyone we encountered seemed sincerely invested in making guests feel comfortable and at ease.
I also appreciated how naturally the hotel incorporates sustainability into daily operations. Local sourcing, support for island artisans, thoughtful material choices, and environmental initiatives all feel integrated into the property rather than heavily advertised.
Mostly, though, Stamna succeeds because it understands the emotional side of travel.
It gives you space to slow down properly. To reconnect with routine, meals, conversation, and quiet. And by the time you leave, you realise how rarely hotels actually allow you to do that anymore.
How to Book
Bookings can be made directly through the Stamna Sifnos website.
Given the hotel’s intimate size and rapidly growing reputation, it’s worth reserving well in advance during summer, particularly for the private pool suites and September stays.
