Long bus trips can be hit or miss. They might be quiet and comfortable, or long, loud, and exhausting—sometimes all on the same journey.

I’ve taken plenty of long and overnight bus (and train) rides over the years, and the experience almost always comes down to two things: your mindset and what you packed.

When you’re prepared, a long bus journey is manageable. When you’re not, it can feel endless.

Having the right long bus trip essentials within easy reach makes all the difference. Below are the items I always bring, along with my personal product recommendations. Keep these in your hand luggage, and you’ll be set up for a far smoother ride, wherever you’re traveling.

Top Long Bus Ride Essentials

1. Water and Snacks

Water and snacks are non-negotiable on a long bus journey. You can’t count on them being provided, and you rarely know when—or if—the next stop will happen.

Bring at least one liter of water in cooler climates and closer to 1.5 liters in hotter destinations to stay properly hydrated. A few easy snacks go a long way, too, especially when hunger hits at inconvenient hours.

Before you fully commit to hydrating like a champion, check whether there’s a toilet on board. If there isn’t, pace yourself accordingly. Speaking from experience, this is wisdom earned the hard way.

Always bring your own reusable water bottle. In countries where tap water isn’t potable, I recommend the LARQ self-cleaning bottle, which purifies water as you go and is ideal for travel days like this.

In destinations where the water is safe to drink, a Hydro Flask is my go-to—it keeps water cold for hours and stands up to being knocked around in your bag.

2. Entertainment

Whatever your entertainment of choice, bring it with you, because onboard Wi-Fi is often unreliable at best and nonexistent at worst. Kindles, books, phones, iPads, and laptops are all long bus ride essentials that help pass the time and keep boredom firmly in check on a long bus journey.

Pre-plan by downloading your favorite Netflix or Prime series, podcasts, or playlists to your phone or tablet in advance. That way, you’re not at the mercy of spotty signals halfway through episode one.

I always bring my Kindle. While I still love a good paper book, for travel it’s unbeatable. It’s lightweight, holds an entire library, and doesn’t require sacrificing half your bag for one novel.

Honestly, it’s one of the best travel tech inventions ever—and a long bus ride is where it truly shines.

3. Travel Pillow

Comfort is key on a long bus journey, and a blow-up or memory foam neck pillow can make the difference between getting some actual rest and spending the next two days unable to turn your head. It supports your neck while you sleep upright and helps prevent that stiff, regrettable morning-after feeling.

4. Portable Power Bank

Never have your device run out of battery with a backup charger. Ensures power for the longest of trips as you can’t always trust buses to have working power outlets. I’d recommend the Anker Powercore 20100.

5. Tissues & Wet Wipes

You can never count on a bus toilet being properly stocked, especially when it comes to toilet paper, so bringing tissues is a no-brainer. A small pack of tissues can save you in situations you’d really rather not be improvising your way through.

I also always pack wet wipes. They’re invaluable for freshening up, wiping down armrests and tray tables, and dealing with any unexpected messes along the way.

Between tissues and wet wipes, you’ll be prepared for everything from hygiene emergencies to minor clean-ups, which is exactly what you want on a long bus ride.

6. Headphones

Headphones aren’t just for music—they’re your first line of defense against bus chaos. From loud, on-bus movies you didn’t sign up to watch to chatty seatmates and rattling engines, a good pair of noise-canceling headphones can turn a stressful ride into a far more peaceful one.

I personally love the Apple AirPods Max for long journeys. The noise cancellation is excellent, the sound quality is rich, and they’re comfortable enough to wear for hours on end—ideal for overnight or marathon bus rides.

If you’re looking for a slightly more travel-friendly or budget-conscious alternative, Bose is also a solid choice. Their noise-canceling headphones consistently deliver top-tier performance and are well worth the investment. Either way, this is one essential you’ll never regret packing.

7. Blanket/sweater/sleeping bag liner

There’s absolutely no predicting bus temperatures. One minute it feels like peak summer in Bangkok, the next you’re convinced the driver has rerouted through Siberia. The safest strategy is layering—wear clothes you can easily add or remove as the temperature swings.

I also recommend packing a lightweight sleeping bag liner or a compact travel blanket, just in case the air-conditioning goes into overdrive. Trying to sleep while freezing is truly miserable. This is especially common in Southeast Asia, where buses are often air-conditioned to arctic levels and shorts and a T-shirt won’t cut it.

8. Phone E-Sim with Data

A phone e-SIM with data is one of those modern essential travel upgrades. Long bus journeys often involve delays, route changes, late-night arrivals, or stations that are… generously described as remote.

Having mobile data means you can check maps, message your accommodation, download last-minute entertainment, or order a ride the moment you arrive.

I recommend Airalo for travel e-SIMs. It’s easy to set up, works in most countries, and saves you the hassle of hunting down a physical SIM card at a bus terminal after a long ride.

Activate it on arrival in the country, and you’ll have data ready the moment the bus doors open—no Wi-Fi roulette required.

9. GPS Map App

GPS map apps like Google Maps or Apple Maps are absolute lifesavers on long bus journeys. They let you track where you are in real time, see how much longer you have to go, and—crucially—confirm that the bus is actually heading where it’s supposed to.

They’re especially useful when you arrive at a chaotic bus station in a new city or country, often tired, slightly disoriented, and carrying all your belongings.

With a GPS app open, you can quickly orient yourself, figure out exits, locate transport options, and get where you need to go without unnecessary stress.

10. Eye Mask

These are essential for blocking out unwanted light and getting some real sleep before you reach your destination. They’re lightweight, pack down easily, and make a huge difference if you’re a light sleeper—or stuck on a bus with the interior lights blazing all night.

11. Hand Sanitiser

No matter where you’re traveling, hand sanitizer is essential, especially on long bus rides. Use it before eating, after bathroom breaks, and anytime water isn’t readily available. Those small, travel-size bottles are absolute lifesavers when sinks are nowhere to be found.

Bonus: In truly desperate situations, it can double as a very makeshift “refresh.” Not ideal, but when you’re on the road, you work with what you’ve got.

12. Reusable Shopping Bag

A reusable shopping bag or tote might not sound exciting, but it’s surprisingly useful on a long bus journey. It’s perfect for carrying snacks, extra layers, or anything you want easy access to without digging through your main bag mid-ride.

When you arrive, it instantly doubles as a grocery bag, beach bag, or catch-all for whatever you pick up along the way.

Choose one that folds down small and lives permanently in your daypack. It weighs next to nothing, takes up zero space, and somehow ends up being used far more often than you’d expect.

What Else is in my Travel Bag?

This one is quite random, but I always love to have a spork at the ready. A spork is a spoon/fork combo with a spoon at one end and a fork at the other.

I always have a tendency to end up with some sort of local roadside takeaway so I always have a spork on me so I can eat it comfortably.

I also always travel with basic pain meds such as paracetamol or ibuprofen in case a headache strikes in the middle of a bus journey.

Always, always keep your valuables with you on the bus and not in your main backpack in the hold. Take them with you when you get off the bus at a rest stop.

Always have your passport, cash, cards, and other valuables near you, especially when sleeping – I love using a belt bag/cross body bag for this. This one from Lululemon is the one I have.
