What exactly is Self- Confidence and Self Esteem?
Confidence is based on trust and reliance. It’s a feeling or state, a faith in something. Self-confidence in that case is having trust or faith in yourself which comes from one’s belief in their own abilities and worth.
Confidence isn’t something tangible nor is it static. Our confidence levels are always fluctuating day in and day out and it may also depend on the situations we face each day.
You may feel very confident in your particular abilities when focused on one task yet not confident at all when faced with another in a completely new situation.
Your self-confidence has much to do with your upbringing and the people you grew up next to and surrounded yourself with. The lessons we learned helped to shape what we believe to be true about our abilities and qualities.
Our confidence also comes from how we have been shown and learned to react when confronting different situations.
Self-Esteem on the other hand is a little different even though both a very much related to the way we think and feel about ourselves.
Your self-esteem is more about how you see yourself as a whole and your overall sense of personal value and worth.
The Importance of Self Confidence
Self confidence is so important for living the best life you can on your own terms. The benefits of confidence are endless. Simply put, having self-confidence will improve your life in many ways. Self-confidence gives you the freedom to make your own smart decisions in life.
Confidence gives you power, people believe you and it helps you to make genuine connections and meet new people. Confidence is attractive and can help you attract the kind of people you want to have in your life.
While there is definitely a difference between confidence and cockiness, the idea is to get to a point where you are comfortable in your own skin and with your own true self and value your talents and what you can achieve or bring to the table both personally and professionally.
By reaching a healthy self-confidence level you are able to live a life without any kind of lack of confidence or low self-esteem and a life where you invest yourself in the important things through having faith in yourself.
Why are the Benefits of Self-Confidence Important?
So, why is self confidence important? There are many benefits to confidence and self-confidence and they are mostly related to self-esteem and self-worth. They are like a delicate web that all rely on each other to function well.
Having more self -confidence can change your life entirely from having more friends and making meaningful connections with your community to having better overall mental health.
Low self-confidence on the other hand is linked with a lack of a social circle, depression, sadness, and self doubt.
The Benefits of Confidence and High Self Esteem
Health
While self-confidence does have an indirect effect on physical health, most of the positive effects of self confidence really are related to mental health.
In the last few years, the importance of mental health awareness has really grown in our societies, and rightly so. Our mental health is directly influenced by our upbringing and our environment much like self-confidence.
When we feel that we have confidence in ourselves we feel positive and we have faith in our skills and talents to achieve what we want to in life.
Such a positive, can-do attitude is the basis of a strong foundation for good mental health. Our self-confidence provides a barrier for criticism and negative energy and we are able to wave off negativity as we know better. This has a fundamental effect on our mental health.
Happiness
The importance of confidence stretches way beyond just physical health. Research shows that people who have healthy levels of self-confidence are generally happier and more fulfilled compared to those who lack confidence.
Confidence really does have an effect on all aspects of life from motivation and pushing yourself to achieve your goals and lead the life you want to having great relationships with family as well as new people.
Having a life rich in meaningful purpose also means better mental health and the motivation for seeking physical health also.
Self-confident individuals also have more confidence in their own decisions and stick with them, allowing them to achieve health and fitness goals more easily.
They can control their emotions more easily and also influence others in a positive way, which might explain why we all prefer to be around happy, positive and motivated people.
Freedom
A lack of self-confidence can in many ways hold you back from magical experiences and the freedom of doing something you love out of fear.
Low levels of self-confidence for many means living in fear- fear of trying new things and fear of certain situations. A lack of self-esteem can also hold you back from getting what you want in life out of fear of not believing in yourself enough to go after what most truly desire.
The advantages of self confidence and self-esteem include freedom. Freedom from fear and freedom to take any path you choose may it be conventional or unconventional.
When it comes to travel, giving yourself the true freedom to explore without fear is a gift. With increasing levels of self-confidence, you are able to meet people with ease, talk about your travel plans and have an open-mind toward new experiences without any kind of self-doubt and fear holding you back.
Greater Self Worth
Self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem go hand in hand.
When you have confidence in yourself and what you can do and achieve you realize your own self-worth. Self-confidence allows us to give ourselves the credit and worthiness we deserve.
Increased Performance
When you know your worth and where your skills lie and you’re confident in what you can do well and can’t do as well you become more productive in both your professional and personal life.
By knowing yourself and being confident in your skills you can take on tasks with poise and work through them quickly, efficiently, and to a high level of quality.
Those skills you don’t have you can work on them or outsource the task, leaving you with more time to do those things that really need your time and attention. By having confidence in your work and what you do, your levels of performance and productivity increase as well.
Think about the last task you attempted that you weren’t too confident with. How were your motivation levels? How long did it take you to complete the task? Did things go smoothly?
Chances are you would have preferred to do something within your comfort zone and while getting out of your comfort zone is greatly beneficial sometimes, it’s having faith in ourselves and what we can do that increases our performance every day.
Benefits of Being Confident: Creativity
Having the self-confidence to start something new and have new ideas can expand your levels of creativity in life and work.
Creativity can come out of a feeling of calm, freedom, motivation, and inspiration- states and feelings that self-confidence helps to promote.
When we know our self-worth we are less likely to take on too much or set ourselves up for failure allowing creativity to come into our lives.
Reduced Social Anxiety
Confident people are normally more relaxed in social settings and meet and talk to people with ease. By having confidence in yourself you don’t need to seek out the approval of others, nor do you let other people’s judgment affect you.
You can move freely in social circles without fear of rejection.
When it comes to new challenges, it’s often self-confident individuals that prevail as they rarely question their own self-worth or abilities. Being a confident person helps you look forward to the future and what it may bring, knowing that whatever life throws at you you can deal with it.
In social situations, confidence can also attract positivity as self-confident people normally have a positive energy about them which naturally attracts other positive individuals. Self-confidence and positivity are contagious to others.
Less Fear and Anxiety
Being more self-confident can mean that you’re finding yourself taking more smart risks in your life and surrounding yourself with positivity.
By taking more risks, even with those outside of your comfort zone and area of expertise you’re learning and developing through new experiences. I mean, nothing ground-breaking came out of people staying in their comfort zones, right!?
Those who often take more risks know that they can either succeed or fail, looking at failure as nothing more than a learning curve. This in itself reduces fear and anxiety that might get in the way of making decisions or taking risks.
Self-confident people generally live lives with little fear of what will be if they take smart risks and have reduced anxiety over things that are out of their control.
Less Stress
These days, stress can really creep in from anywhere. A stressful job perhaps and constant deadlines? or perhaps it’s a stressful relationship that’s keeping you up all night or even the possible pressure and stress of not knowing what to do with your life?
One of the largest self confidence benefits is that it helps you to better deal with stress compared to those who lack confidence and self-esteem. While self-confidence doesn’t actually decrease levels of stress and the number of stressful situations you might have in your life, it can help you to be more positive when dealing with stress.
As self-confident people often know and value their strengths they are also better at realizing how much stress they can cope with and when to ask for help.
With confident people having less fear and anxiety, greater self worth and happiness means they can also deal with stressful situations better and faster reducing any prolonged amounts of stress put on the body and mind.
Better Sleep
With reduced stress, anxiety, and fear, as well as more happiness and freedom, it’s safe to say the benefits of confidence transcend into the ethereal.
However, studies reveal that it’s sleep that has the biggest effect on self-confidence and self-esteem. Research shows that people with insomnia and those who got less sleep have lower levels of self-esteem and confidence throughout the day compared to those who slept for 7-8 hours a night.
Richer Travel Experiences
By putting yourself out there when traveling (in a safe way of course), you’re setting yourself up for richer and more meaningful travel experiences and connections.
A self-confident traveler is much more likely to go out on their own, connect with other travelers and sign up for adventures than someone without confidence.
With confidence in yourself and your instincts when it comes to travel, you can have a very different and more positive experience compared with someone who prefers to stay in their resort looking at their phone for fear of the unknown.
Self-confidence is particularly crucial in solo travel, it allows you to have the faith in yourself to be able to see the world alone, to be comfortable in your own company, and to push you towards meeting new people. In fact, one of the best things you can do to boost your self-confidence is to travel solo, at least once in your life.
Better Relationships
One of the benefits of confidence is its effect on your relationships. Having high self-confidence will no doubt have a positive effect on your relationships with your loved ones.
Self-confidence often means having a positive outlook on life which will have a direct effect on the people around you as most people want to be around others who are positive.
A positive mental attitude and healthy self-esteem can lead to stronger, healthier relationships with others and can also help you during tough times and break-ups as you’ll have enough faith in yourself to bounce back and get on with your life and your own personal goals.
Where to Start to be More Self-Confident?
Firstly, it’s all about the small steps. Don’t try to push yourself too hard or expect too much at the beginning.
It’s worth knowing that we are all different and we learn things and adapt at different rates which is perfectly ok! Developing greater confidence isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight and it does take time, work, and patience but it is achievable.
Know that achieving self-confidence alone isn’t the only way. Seeking out professional help and talking to a therapist or life coach can really help to increase self confidence too.
How to Achieve Confidence and High Self Esteem
Here are my top steps toward becoming more self confident today:
↠ Look inside yourself. By looking inside yourself and finding out what it is that you struggle with most is the basis of the new chapter of your life of improved self confidence.
Is your level of confidence low because you’re shy? Perhaps you avoid confrontation? Are you scared of failure? Are you scared of people judging your opinions/goals/life choices?
Make a list of what might be stopping you from going out there and achieving what you want to and the emotions that might be pushing your self-perception down. Write them down and try to make goals towards combating them.
↠ Learning. It’s through learning and growth that we become more self-confident. Learn from other personal development gurus, speakers and coaches that can help you with your personal growth and confidence but don’t stop there.
Your self-confidence can actually improve as a result of learning an entirely new skill such as marketing, cooking or even carpentry. Knowledge is the best way to start improving confidence and will naturally help you to become a more confident person.
↠ Surround yourself with positive people that encourage you. The company you keep says a lot about you but they also have a huge effect on how you behave and what you think. By surrounding yourself with positive people who encourage you and raise you up, there’s no way your self-confidence can’t grow.
↠ Practise gratitude. Make a list of things that you’re grateful for, however small they might be. Think about your achievements to date and the skills that you have. Write it all down and praise yourself for it all.
↠ Write a list of goals. Write a list of goals and things that you would like to achieve if you had more self-confidence. Think about the areas of your life that you’d like to work on and where you picture yourself in a year from now. Try to visualise it and break down any big goals into small, manageable steps which you can begin to action today.
How Self-Confidence Can Help the Modern Traveller?
If you’re someone who dreams of travelling the world, far and wide then faith in yourself and your abilities is crucial to your travel experience.
Confidence levels really do have an effect on everything in life and that includes travel and how you are able to see the world. By having enough confidence in yourself and your actions you’ll be able to take greater, albeit safe risks, discover more and have richer experiences overall.
Here are just some ways that the benefits of confidence in yourself can help your travels.
↠ Richer experiences- self-confidence will mean that you are more at ease with talking to other travellers and locals and this exchange of information can provide you with much richer travel experiences. Sometimes it’s you who needs to reach out or ask for help and having more self-confidence will allow you to do this with ease.
↠ Making friends- If you’re travelling solo then I’m sure you’ll want to meet people along the way. Improving self-confidence can reduce the fear of rejection and allow you to connect with other like-minded travellers.
↠ Better in dangerous situations- by having confidence in yourself, your intuition and your skills, you’ll be able to avoid nasty or potentially dangerous situations when abroad.
↠ Courage- Self-confidence can give you the courage to travel the world on your own. You won’t always be able to find a partner or friend that can travel at the same time as you but self-confidence will give you the courage to be able to just go on your own.
By waiting for the right person to be available you might be restricting yourself from an incredible trip. Solo travel is beneficial in so many ways but one of the keys to making it work is great self-confidence.
