The Complete Folegandros, Greece Travel Guide
Folegandros pairs dramatic cliffside scenery with quiet beaches, exceptional food, and one of the most charming villages in the Cyclades. Here’s my guide to the best things to do in Folegandros.
Wild, rugged, and refreshingly low-key, Folegandros is a small Cycladic island that has managed to retain its authenticity while much of the Aegean has succumbed to overtourism.
There are no cruise ship crowds, designer beach clubs, or packed sunset viewpoints here. Instead, you’ll find dramatic cliffs plunging into impossibly blue water, quiet hiking trails connecting hidden beaches, and one of the most beautiful village centers in Greece.
While neighboring Santorini draws millions of visitors each year, Folegandros remains blissfully understated, and I do hope it stays that way. Days are spent swimming in secluded coves, exploring whitewashed Chora, lingering over long seafood lunches, and watching the sun sink into the Aegean from a cliffside church. It’s the sort of island that encourages you to slow down.
Whether you’re planning a few days of island hopping or a longer Cyclades escape, this guide covers the very best things to do in Folegandros, along with where to stay, eat, shop, and experience the island at its best.

Short on Time and Planning a Trip? Here are my top picks for Folegandros
Where to Stay: Anemi Hotel & Spa, Blue Sands Boutique Hotel, Anemomilos Boutique Hotel
Must Eats: Irini’s Tavern & Grocery Store, To Barbounaki, Papalagi Seafood
Top Things to Do: Hike from Agkali to Agios Nikolaos beach, Church of Virgin Mary of Folegandros for sunset, hire a boat, and beach hop.
Travel Tips: Book a hire car to explore the island via Discover Cars. Book ferries to Folegandros and other Greek Islands via Ferryhopper (what I use).
How to Get to Folegandros
Folegandros doesn’t have an airport, which is part of what keeps the island feeling so peaceful and under-the-radar. Most visitors arrive by ferry, either from Athens or nearby Santorini.
From Athens, ferries depart from Piraeus Port and take between 4 and 8 hours, depending on the vessel, with high-speed services significantly reducing journey times during the summer season.
If you’re already island-hopping through the Cyclades, Santorini or Milos is the easiest gateway. High-speed ferries connect Santorini and Milos with Folegandros in as little as 45 minutes to 1 hour, making it a popular route for travelers looking to escape Santorini’s crowds.

Ferries arrive at Karavostasis, Folegandros’ small port, from where buses and taxis connect visitors to Chora and the island’s beaches. You can also pick up your rental car from here.
For booking ferry tickets, I recommend using Ferryhopper. The platform allows you to compare schedules, routes, ferry operators, and prices in one place, making it the simplest way to organize your onward journey to Folegandros. The app also lets you live-track some ferry services. During the summer months, ferry services can sell out well in advance, so it’s worth booking as early as possible.
Once there, I recommend choosing to rent a car in Folegandros to make the most of your trip. While buses connect the main villages and beaches, having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore the whole island at your own pace. As it’s a small island and rentals are limited, book in advance. Folegandros is also a great island for renting a scooter or ATV.
Best Things to Do in Folegandros
Explore Chora

Perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff, Chora is one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades. Whitewashed houses, bougainvillea-draped alleyways, and a maze of pedestrian lanes make it a joy to explore without any particular destination in mind.
Unlike the bustling towns of Santorini or Mykonos, Chora, Folegandros’ main town moves at a slower pace. Locals gather in the shaded squares, cats nap on sun-warmed steps, and small boutiques, cafés, and tavernas spill onto the streets.
Be sure to wander through the village’s three interconnected piazzas and stay until sunset, when the golden light washes over the white buildings and the atmosphere becomes especially magical.
The best time to visit Chora is in the evening.
Relax on Agkali Beach

Agkali Beach is one of Folegandros’ most popular stretches of sand and an easy place to spend a lazy afternoon. Tucked into a sheltered bay on the island’s west coast, it combines pebble/course sand with crystal-clear turquoise water that’s perfect for swimming.
Despite its popularity, Agkali retains a laid-back atmosphere, with a handful of tavernas and cafés just steps from the shore (I’d recommend Pasithea or O Psaromiligkas).
It’s also a useful starting point for exploring some of the island’s more secluded beaches by foot or by water taxi. Arrive early during the summer months to secure a good spot, then settle in for a day of swimming, sunbathing, and long seaside lunches.
Hike from Agkali to Agios Nikolaos Beach

One of the most rewarding short walks on Folegandros is the coastal trail connecting Agkali Beach with Agios Nikolaos Beach. The path winds along the rugged shoreline, offering sweeping views of the Aegean and the island’s dramatic rocky landscape.
The hike takes around 20 to 30 minutes each way and is manageable for most visitors, though I’d recommend sturdy footwear, even though I did it in flip-flops and was ok.
At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with Agios Nikolaos, a secluded beach framed by tamarisk trees and backed by steep cliffs. The water here is exceptionally clear, making it an ideal spot for swimming, snorkeling, and a spot of lunch before making the walk back or catching a water taxi to Agkali.
Spend the Afternoon at Katergo Beach
Katergo is widely considered Folegandros’ most spectacular beach. Accessible only by boat or via a steep hiking trail, its remote setting keeps the crowds at bay and adds to its never-ending appeal.
Backed by towering cliffs and washed by impossibly clear turquoise water, it’s the sort of place that reminds you why the Cyclades remain so captivating. There are no sunbeds, beach bars, or facilities here, so come prepared with water, snacks, and plenty of sun protection.
The best way to arrive is by water taxi from Agkali, or from Karavostasis, then spend a few hours swimming, snorkeling, and soaking up the wild beauty before heading back to civilization.
Hire a Boat and Explore
One of the best ways to experience Folegandros is from the water. Hiring a small boat allows you to reach hidden coves, sea caves, and remote beaches that are difficult or impossible to access by land, and Fole has a few of those.
As you cruise around the island’s rugged coastline, you’ll discover dramatic cliffs plunging into the Aegean, secluded swimming spots, and stretches of coastline that remain blissfully untouched.
No boating license is required for many of the smaller rental boats available from Karavostasis, making it an accessible adventure for most. Pack a picnic, bring plenty of water, and spend the day anchoring in quiet bays for swims in some of the clearest water in the Cyclades.
Beaches I recommend heading to with your own boat are Katergo, Livadaki, and Fira beach. Also head to Ampeli, Ligaria, and Agios Georgios Beach in the north, but these three are also accessible by land.
Watch the Sunset from Church of Panagia

Perched high above Chora, the iconic Church of Panagia is one of Folegandros’ most recognizable landmarks and the island’s premier sunset viewpoint. A zigzagging stone path leads from the edge of the village up to the whitewashed church, a walk that takes around 15 minutes and becomes increasingly rewarding with every step.
Arrive before sunset to watch the sky transform from gold to pink as the sun sinks into the Aegean, casting a warm glow across Chora and the surrounding cliffs. The views are spectacular, probably the best I’ve seen in the Cyclades, stretching across the island’s rugged coastline and out to the neighboring islands.
It’s a simple experience, but one that you’ll remember long after leaving Folegandros.
Beach Hop
While Folegandros may be small, it packs an impressive variety of beaches into its rugged coastline. Beyond Agkali and Katergo, you’ll find quiet coves and pebbled bays scattered around the island, each with its own character.
Livadaki rewards those willing to make the hike with crystal-clear water and a wonderfully secluded setting, while Agios Georgios on the northern coast is a favorite for its dramatic scenery and wild atmosphere.
Part of the fun is exploring and finding your own favorite stretch of shoreline. Whether you travel by foot, bus, boat, or scooter, beach hopping is one of the best ways to experience the island’s untamed beauty.
Visit Ano Meria
For a glimpse of traditional island life, make time to visit Ano Meria, a small village on the northwestern side of Folegandros. Unlike the compact layout of Chora, Ano Meria is spread out across a fertile valley, with whitewashed farmhouses, stone walls, and small family-run tavernas dotting the landscape.
Life moves noticeably slower here, and the village offers an interesting contrast to the island’s more polished Chora and beaches.
Stop by the local folklore museum to learn about Folegandros’ agricultural heritage, then settle in for a leisurely lunch at a traditional taverna (I love Irini’s) before exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby beaches.
Go for Sundowners at Anemomilos
For one of the best sunset drinks on the island, head to Anemomilos Boutique Hotel on the edge of Chora. The hotel bar enjoys an elevated position overlooking the sea and the island’s dramatic cliffs.
Arrive before sunset to secure a table and watch the sky shift through shades of gold, pink, and orange as the sun drops into the Aegean. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with chilled music, well-made cocktails, and some of the best views in Folegandros.
It’s the perfect spot to ease into the evening before heading into Chora for dinner and better still if you’re staying there.
Take an Afternoon at Anemi Spa
If you’re looking to slow down and indulge in a little self-care, spend an afternoon at Anemi Spa. Located within the stylish Anemi Hotel, the spa offers a welcome retreat from the summer heat, with a menu of treatments inspired by the natural elements of the Cyclades.
Expect relaxing massages, restorative facials, and body therapies designed to leave you feeling refreshed after days spent hiking coastal trails and swimming in the Aegean.
Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, a spa treatment followed by time beside the pool makes for a wonderfully leisurely island afternoon.
Go Hiking

Folegandros is one of the best hiking destinations in the Cyclades, with a network of well-preserved footpaths connecting villages, beaches, and remote corners of the island.
Many of these trails were once the only way locals could travel between settlements, and today they offer an excellent way to experience the island’s rugged landscapes away from the coast.
Hikes range from short walks to secluded beaches to longer routes that cross the island’s dramatic hillsides and cliffs. Along the way, you’ll pass dry-stone walls, tiny chapels, grazing goats, and sweeping views over the Aegean.
For active travelers, hiking reveals a quieter, more authentic side of Folegandros that many visitors never see.
Where to Stay
Despite its small size, Folegandros has a surprisingly strong selection of boutique hotels and stylish rental properties. Most accommodations are concentrated around Chora and Karavostasis, making it easy to access the island’s restaurants, beaches, and hiking trails.
